Aftermarket muffler close in sound/db as OEM

How great is that vid? I've watched dozens of these making all sorts of things, and they're appalling and impressive at the same time. I bet they sound better than FlowMasters!

Aftermarket muffler close in sound/db as OEM

The "turbo" thing is fine for modded-up musclecars, IMO. After all, that's where you're going to find 3+ inch diameters--in a strong fully-welded design--to handle 500+ inch engines. But for us CBods....quiet power is the way to go.

Aftermarket muffler close in sound/db as OEM

Indeed, the Corvair muffer (before it was a "turbo" muffler) was designed to provide minimal backpressure against the turbocharger that had already muted most of the roar of exhaust pulsations. I just recalled that when I was 17-18 (1974) and put headers on my 340 Dart and basically fabbed...

Aftermarket muffler close in sound/db as OEM

I should add that I went with the Magnaflows upon advice of a very old-school, family-owned muffler shop, in business for decades, who sold all varieties of stock and aftermarket mufflers. I figured the proprietor had a pretty damn good idea of what our cars sounded like, and he nailed it.

Aftermarket muffler close in sound/db as OEM

Big-engined C bods had a quiet burble using big muffler, whereas the muscle Mopars had smaller mufflers with resonators. When I got my car it had awful, drone-y FlowMasters, installed in 1999 when they were pretty much the only game in town. I went with MagnaFlows, and my car now sounds very...

Looking for photos of tti long tube headers on a big block

I used Hoffman's repro looms, modified them a bit as needed (bet you can't tell where!) and used two sets of MSD StreetFire cables so that I'd have whatever mix of straight or angled plug boots I needed at each plug. The cables are custom length fit, btw, so you can run them "a bit wide" to...

    Exhaust Tips

Those are very nice looking tips. I'm a longtime car fixer guy and can do everything except paint, including replacing/welding exhaust systems. But when I removed the ugly, incorrect chrome tips from the PO and went with proper tips, I took it to a quality muffler shop, where they bent new...

TTI Shortie or Long Tube headers for 68 NY’er?

I agree with Ross, but if you REALLY want to go with the simplicity of headers, and maybe a little "hot rod" look, I'd go with shorties. Long tubes are to build torque in high-winding performance engines with lots of cam timing, and that's not you. The other really BIG reason is ground...

    Big block headers

Inside, and they don't really "cross over to the outside near the the transmission gear selector". They generally sweep straight back once they clear the T-bars. For street headers (meaning NOT race car fenderwell headers), I've only seen one application of a tube going outside a T-bar...

    Waldron, TTI or custom bent.

Having said all that above, if I was restoring a hemiCuda (again) to concours standards, I would not hesitate for one second about spending $5K with ECS for their Chrysler-licensed repro exhausts. I've seen this stuff at Carlisle (many of us have), and it's amazing. Sometimes you get what you...

    Waldron, TTI or custom bent.

I've always had good results from custom shops, and yes, this requires a little research to find a good one, but once you start talking to fellow car-guys the field begins to narrow quickly. "You gotta go to Gus at Muffler King. He's been there 20 years. He's got an LS6 Chevelle and a Hemi...

    Big block headers

Offset and relocatable vs the turning axis. It's an okay tool, not totally necessary. I generally use it due to the longer handle for higher torque issues. But yeah, in odd situations, the relocatable handle can be useful. I love the wobble stuff. Very useful. Snap-On would NOT approve...
