I used aluminum rivets with black heads in place of the staples. Didnt really consider the scratch thing cuz they were new but I guess its possible at some time in the future.

The marine Keder I linked to is just about the same but instead of a vinyl mtrl its a fabric welded to a flexible plastic core. And its designed to slide out. I would want to test fit as the original channel is not completely circular. They sell it on amazon.

Another option is to paint over the chrome and with a damp cloth (lacquer thinner) gently rub it off the chrome only. Paint comes chrome easy. Even easier if its only been on there 24hrs or so. For scratches, not bigger areas, Ive had luck painting with toothpicks with the tip broken off just a little. The paint stays in a line and can be compounded down to flat if needed.
