I pulled the 383 out of my 66 windsor

Here is my take on how to rebuild w/ success. As @dematt said bore the cylinders .030 over. That will insure good ring seal also it will remove the ridge at the top of the cyl. bores eliminating possible piston ring breakage. As for your crankshaft, if measuring w/ a micrometer allows, micro...

what is best oil to use on 1978 Chrysler with 400 engine?

My personal choice has been 10w30 Valvoline VR1 w/ a bottle of Lucas Zinc additive. The added zinc additive combined w/ the VR1 gives excellent results. The viscosity benefits is critical lubrication the upper valvetrain gets there much faster thereby minimizing cold start wear. With some of...

    383 Intake install

Just use the steel shim only intake gasket. Use a little RTV in the corners where the intake gasket meets cylinder head and engine block to prevent oil seepage or leaks. Clean all manifold bolts and chase the treads in the cylinder head. Oil the threads prior to install and torque to specs.

What is going on with my valve train?!?!?!?!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. A through tear down and cleaning of all engine parts is required. This is a lot of effort on your part to carry out Make sure that 440 Source provides all necessary gaskets to do so. Failure to do will certainly reduce engine life and guaranteeing...

    Sending Unit Recommendations

Stay away from cheap aftermarket sending units. Accuracy is debatable, most new ones are not. Check your sending unit ground strap for corrosion and do the same for the body, battery and instrument panel grounds. As for lock rings, OEM is the way to go. The aftermarket ones are poorly made and...

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

Your engine teardown will reveal the truth. Post photos of your teardown and inspection. @ayilar's Buttercup was supposed to be in good condition and if you follow the thread it was one of the best running 440's in such poor condition internally I have seen in the last 30yrs.

I have a '71 Imperial with an engine leaking oil...

Your decision to rebuild is correct. No mention was made of exact mileage on the car. With no engine teardown having been done. I would caution you that a ring replacement only may not give you the results and quality your looking for. The same goes for the crankshaft. In crankshaft precision...

Idle gets slower and slower . . .

As MoPar~Man stated improper vented tank can cause your problem. A little Dirty Harry trick, loosen you gas cap and retry. Also look for collapsed rubber hoses between the fuel tank w/ it running.

    Rod bearings

Something that was not address was resizing the connecting rods. Whenever bearing damage like this is found resizing the connecting rods or replacement is MANDITORY. My personal spec on rod journal run out is .0005 to .0010. @68PK21 440.6bbl hit the nail right on the head about this.

    When to replace transmission bands?

While examining the low reverse band if there are no scuff or abrasions on the band material. See if you can pick or lift off any band material w/ you fingernail. if it passes all of the above, it's usable. Always replace the kick down band. Cheap insurance.

    Lifter noise at start up

I few questions come to mind. What is the oil pressure on initial start up and when fully warmed up. Second, w/ the cylinder heads off was there grit and sludge present. Enough debris present in the engine cause among other oil pump and bearing wear There is an outside possibility that the oil...

    8-10 mpg

Here is my take on improving fuel mileage. Something that has not been addressed her is timing chain slack. Worn timing chains are a key contributor to fuel mileage loss. Also worn camshaft lobes can kill engine efficiency. Second, Differential gear ratio does impact fuel mileage. The difference...
