Dark And Steamy

69 fury

General Information

Nothing like black vinyl in a black convertible in July. Put on your terry cloth undies and fill'm with powder! Having said that its about time this boat gets out. Been about 6 years and this weekend was it's first car show. They suggested I park in a more accessible area away from the corvairs and cobras:) Most hadn't seen a fury in person before and those that did knew it from driving tests. Of course no one could really challenge me so I told then it was Richard Petty's daily driver...not really.

Its was originally a yellow 318 Fury III and was abused and broken by PO so I'm slowly making it drivable. Now holds an older shop built 440 6bbl. Mild cam. TCI 727 trans, 3.55 SureGrip, aluminum bb radiator, trans and power steering coolers, updated front suspension and shocks, frame connectors, new floors, NOS torsion bars, and disc brake/booster/MC conversion (scarebird), flowmaster 40s on 3" exhaust, MSD coil. Recently added are the gears and new rear springs (espo), oem sway bar (never had one), brake lines, and exhaust H pipe. Of course what made a giant difference was finding a guy(or girl) who could tune it. A godsend even if he did laugh at me because of its previous "tune". Suffice to say I used 2 feet and stalled at gas stations which of course blocked traffic and ticked off lotto and vape buyers. Not cool.

Wheels are American Racing VN500 magnum 500s 17x8 front and 17x9 rear. Tires are 255/55-17 front and 275/55-17 rear. Next up is electrical and dash, vert top window replacement, trunk replacement...maybe, so spendy $$$. Plus it has an identity crisis with sport fury door panels and 70 dash. But I like them so it can wait. I want to get to Carlisle this summer somethin bad. To prepare I'm going to sit on a hot water bottle in a tanning booth while someone throws grasshoppers at my forehead.

Nice car. I'm from Virginia. Know all about hot humid mid-Atlantic summers.

What distributor and coil are you running?

Nice looking car, man. Worth the fried egg *** if you ask me.

Black interiors in convertibles should be outlawed anywhere the sun shines. LOL My '70 Fury's black interior and black top is deadly on a hot day, put the top down and you fry, put the top up and you roast! Nowhere to hide. I found a solution by fluke, in the Canadian winter plastic seats are freaking cold and sitting on one for 5 minutes will suck all the heat out of your butt. The seat becomes happy, but you are left shaking and shivering like a dog crapping razor blades. I bought an outrageously thick artificial sheepskin slip on, one size fits all, seat covers for the front buckets. Being my daily driver I was in heaven that first winter. However, spring arrived and I as usual procrastinated such that it was mid July before I removed the seat covers. Took one trip in the sun before I put the sheepskin back on the buckets. My car is scorch red so my sheepskin was also red. Looked pretty good. Not sure what color would look best on your car, triple black is hard to beat. Whatever, a nice thick sheep skin acts almost like the seat is air conditioned, so color is less important on a hot day. LOL
Your car looks fantastic, very well done. Your engine and power train options should make it pretty quick and fun to drive. I'm about to upgrade my rad and cooling so I was checking out your underhood picture. Why did you include a power steering cooler?
Beautiful car, you should be very proud of your build!
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Yes, removable seat covers are in order. Had'nt thought about sheepskin but your right about better for heat and cold. Steering cooler because the headers like to cook the steering gear. Was leaking bad when I got it. Of course I added a DIY heat shield too so maybe cooler not needed now. I'm going to add more engine pics soon .

This is one reason I'm thinking of switching the black vinyl top on my black LeBaron to white, or get rid of it altogether...... nice Fury, "all business" in black; beautiful engine compartment too. Where in MD are you? When summer hits, restrict those top down rides to after dark, and you'll be glad you did........ Hope to see this in person at a show sometime.

drive about 45 min north of DC on rt 97 to Westminster and you are real close. at the show I was at there was mumbled talk of others that had c-bodies not too far away. kinda like talking about big-foot.

Sounds like Olney/Mt. Airy area - I know it, not well, but I know it. Yes, there ARE other C-body guys up there. The CPOC does a show near there in June every year at a Chrysler dealer..... hopefully cooler temps are making cruising in black more pleasant.....

Sharp looking. Like the Six Pack. Added one to my brother's 360CI build. What I find different on the Mopar Six Packs is the vacuum operated outboard carbs. Pontiac had them early on, but went to a mechanical linkage due in part that if you cracked them open and then had to slow quickly or slam on the brakes, they were slow to close and the carbs could still hang open momentarily while trying to fight the brakes to stop or slow down. Mopar's seem to work just fine and gives a smooth transition, perhaps better engineered. Have never seen a set-up with mechanical linkage, but am sure it has been done. Wonder if it is more responsive rather than waiting for the vacuum operated carbs to kick in.

Always looked like a road runner but full size to me and sweet with a drip top badass

Agreed. Until I found this it was going to be a b-body. But no I'm a convert. This look was always the plan. I understand trying to make a full size sporty and no road wheels seems silly to most but I'm loving the modestly modified look.

Awesome looking car. Sharp looking. Love the black on black. However the black interior is not at all good in the sun. Don't get me wrong, when your cruising at maybe 70 mph, its good, but sitting in traffic or at a show with no trees. It doesn't "mix". Gets hot real quick. In my opinion, and I'm just making a suggestion, but you may want to add air conditioning. My step-dad has a 67 Sport Fury Convertible. Originally yellow with black interior. The car is dark blue with blue interior now. Again, great looking car, two thumbs up from me.
