Justin's Toys

A three bay slice of Heaven

General Information

I've been into anything mechanical since....ever. I'm a car guy through and through. I've spent my entire life balancing God, family, friends, and cars. It's a bit of a juggle sometimes. I joined this group because I bought a car I'm not completely familiar with yet I've always wanted, a 1975 Royal Monaco. Stone stock, 4 door hardtop, with 44067 miles on the clock. I quickly realized you can't just pick up a catalog or hit up a famous website to maintain it. I know exactly were to go to gets parts for my 70 El Camino. But, I was clueless on this one. I've never even seen one in person until I bought this one. I've got all the original paper work, the receipt from the check when the original owner paid 5105.00 for the car. The mileage ticket says it had 4 miles on it when she drove it away. I even have the thank you letter from the Waco Dodge to her for choosing them. The car is completely rust and damage free. I Love it. My 10 year old has claimed it for her own. I really hate to disappoint her. But, father\daughter projects are on the way I'm sure.

Here's home. My El Camino is in pieces behind the two closed doors but, has since been completed. I sold the 1987 AeroCoupe to pay for my wedding. The 94 Impala SS is still here.

Here is the Goliath. I live in SW Virginia. My father drove to the middle of Indiana to check it over for me. I gave him carte blanche. He picked it over, and called me 45 minutes later and said "Well I guess you bought a car!" Three weeks later I flew to Lexington KY. One of my best friends from High school picked me up and we went to Indiana and drove it back. After giving it an oil change and swapping out the original ignition module and voltage regulator I called it good. I then discovered the wipers weren't connected to the motor or each other. I replaced the bushings, promptly sliced my right hand open down to the bone and met some really nice people in the emergency room. Two days later after visiting my folks. I dropped both original U-joints in Midway KY. Thank God again for great friends and Oreilly's for actually having the parts in stock. Try hammering in u-joints with stitches in your hand. After that, smooth sailing. 80-90 mph for nearly 500 miles home. She returned 13.5 mpg and a ride like it's 6 inches off the road.

The only issue with interior is the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel, and one little crack in the dash right where the door shuts. The front floor mats aren't right but, the rear ones were put there by the guys in the plant. I'm currently looking for originals for the front.

This is the only real disappointment. It's all there. The battery cover is long gone and the voltage regulator has been replaced. But, everything is there and has Chrysler part numbers on them. This is my first vintage Dodge. Scratch that, it's my first Dodge. I know old cars, but I learning all new things with this one. The engine bay will be cleaned and detailed by spring. By summer it will be fuel injected and the Holley 2245 will be shelved. More to come folks. Merry Christmas, enjoy your family and friends. Don't forget the reason for the season. We all know our country needs it right now.

So, originally I planned to either FI Tech or Holley Sniper my 400. Just for reliability mostly. Plus half way through my trip home in it, it developed an off idle and mid-rpm stumble. I rebuilt the carb, no better. I replaced the intake gasket. Which failed the brake clean test. The problem persisted and seemed to be getting worse. My solution was to replace the 2bbl Holley and go 4 barrel. I read a thread some where in this site suggesting the top of the carb could be warped. Admittedly I cranked down the wingnut like a fool before I left KY. At Luke Pakrojak's suggestion I purchased an Edlebrock AVS 2 650 and went for the ONLY aluminum intake I could find, a Weiand 8008. I purchased the air cleaner from oldkimmer up in Canada. After beating my head against the car to make the bell crank assembly work with an aftermarket intake and buying all the Mopar exclusive goodies for the carb, it lives! It starts better than it did before, its incredibly smooth plus The vaccuminder fender light doesn't stay on the second you touch the gas pedal. Life is ,once again, good! Plus it looks great. Thanks to all for the advice (great carb) thank you oldkimmer for the air cleaner. I just cleaned it with soap and water. It looks awesome! Now its time to hunker down for snow!

The mid summer cruise in still happens, any more most of what shows up are lifted F150s and ricers getting in trouble. My El camino has no love of stand still traffic. So, I've never taken it. However, the Monaco may make the voyage this year. I do plan to check out the swap meet at the MDA show. Not gonna hold my breathe though.

So you installed an Edelbrock 4 bbl. Did you have to modify the transmission kick down? Any linkage issues?

The period correct air cleaner looks great.

I think I heard the 4bbl will get you 15hp more over the 2bbl. Apparently with the 400, head and valve work is needed in order to do much more. I have dual exhaust now so that helps. With a wagon of course I’d like more power. But for the most part it’s adequate for cruising around.

You should have done some stopwatch checks before the swap!

1906, the Weiand intake ports were too big. Had to cut the bracket to fit around them. Then had to make two extender plates to bring it out to line up with the carb linkage. Then! I had to order PN 8022 & 8089 so I could attach the lick down and fuel line. FUN

Here's the best i can show. New phone, its a real pain.

Drivability was the whole purpose of the swap. Plus my inner child wanted the cop car grown when i hit the gas. I sell exhaust to nearly every muffler shop in SW VA, northern NC and parts of WV. This spring it will get duals run. Nothing loud, it has a brand new single exhaust on it now. I want to give it a chance breathe a little better.

Just checked out pictures of your wagon. Damn. That's one fine car, great job. I love the detail work. Not knowing Mopars as well as GM's, I'm going to ask a dumb question. Are those wheel cover or optional wheels? They look great.

Thank you for the details on the 4bbl. If I get that done on the wagon it will be by someone who knows how to do the whole thing turn key. I don’t want a “yeah I think I can do that” answer. Totally respect the work you did to make it happen.

Those are hubcaps! Yuh! Believe it or not! Credit to Mopar for going with what had to be an expensive design. Looks like a wheel, doesn’t it? I believe it is correct for 69 Monaco’s, but not for my year. It just looks better than the stock “pie pan” hubcaps, which look very appropriate on mom’s forgettable grocery go getter wagon. Yawn. I got those early on.

Should be in the restoration thread. A guy in Arizona sold them to me. I re-painted them myself. They are HEAVY.

Most guys like the road wheels with beauty rings, it’s a good looking style and looks good on all Mopars.
