1964 NYer cigar lighter weirdness

I don’t smoke, but something weird about my lighter in the dash.

When I pull the lighter knob, the whole assembly comes out (shell , or barrel).

what is supposed to secure it to the dashboard?

Typically the barrel will have a couple of tabs that catch on the sheet metal hole it slides into. One or two "messing withs" may break them, depending on usage.
