Hey guys! I was trying to figure out some things about this car but can’t find a decent Newport decoder around. Would any of you guys be able to help me decode this or point to a place that would have the info I need? I found some Cuda and charger decoders but obviously a less popular (or collectible I guess) car like mine came up with less lol. I found a lot of the small stuff was the same across vehicles (like paint) but that was pretty obvious stuff.

Thanks guys!

Thanks! Out of curiosity though, I see that I have “99” for my “ab” row which equates to “standard cid engine 8 cyl ( w/ positive crankvent system)” what do you think that means? I understand the 8 cylinder part obviously but it’s a 383 with a 2 barrel so why not list it as such?
I don't know why, but the 99 is a 413 on a New Yorker tag.

Huh weird. Well in this case it’s most decidedly a 383 and also the original engine. Now I’m curious to see why that’s marked differently. Maybe someone else will know!

The 99 code is the standard engine in any car line/model. Any optional engine will have a different code.

For 1965 C bodies, the 99 engine code simply means the standard engine for that particular application was installed instead of an optional engine, which would be coded as applicable.

99 for a Newport (C1*) would be a 383-2
99 for a 300 model (C2*) would be a 383-4
99 for a New Yorker (C3*) will be the 413-4

Three different assemblies but all three code 99. To be effective in decoding, one has to know the specific standard engine or have access to something like a data book.

Ah that makes a lot of sense, thank you! I just found it strange that the code for a 383-2bbl was listed in the decoder but now with what you said that means that the 383-2bbl was an option for a different car but standard for mine?

Thanks a bunch both of you guys I appreciate it.

I've never seen 99 coding on A or B bodies. I've only seen it on full size Dodge, Chryslers and Imperials.

Do you have examples of other applications?

383-2 would have been optional for Furys and Polaras, but standard for Chrysler Newports. USA specs.

Welcome. Cool car '65 Newport 2DHT white over red. Take good care of it. I could use a 3/4 view picture of the front bumper and fender top area, sample attached. My decoder is a work in progress--when done will post publicly for free. Please review the report for errors & omissions. I think the standard engine was a 383 2 Bbl.

My antivirus does not like that address. I would love to process your stick L tags. No charge to anyone ever.

References say that the 99 code stands for the original installed engine being the standard engine for that year, model and delivery point--with appropriate/required emissions control. Placed on the fender tag for posterity for the benefit of future inspectors and technicians. In 1965, I believe this meant only adding the CCV Closed Crankcase Ventilation system. At some point (1970 +/-) , CA started mandating additional emissions modifications and controls. It took until the mid-'80's to achieve reliable, functional computer-controlled engine/fuel system operation and controls that put some pleasure back into driving cars, especially high-performance cars & trux. Loving the '60's cars. My car is a Roman Red Ram K.

Thanks for the post. I learn something from each example. A little fuzzy & hidden. Please confirm bottom line B04 12071 C25 M41 AA1 Especially the number or letter after AA and any characters under N or T.Is the stamped number in the top right area "16"? Report is ready to print. I can add the rest of the VIN to complete the report--but not critical. I'll just use 8253 100001.

Very cool car. Regal Gold Poly paint. I'd love to a see a pic of the car shining in the sun. Please advise color of top. White? Beige? Original? History?
