All: Finally the 300 comes out of hibernation after 17 years in a warm bed. Going to shop tomorrow to have entire front suspension installed, new brakes, etc and then to my paint guy for freshened up firewall, inner fenders, grille support etc. I do have a couple of questions for all the guys out there with more experience than me. This car came out of LA plant, and when removed, the inner fender inserts? see photo, were black. Some have told me they should be the same color as the car, and some have said that on cars that came out of LA, they were black. What say you? Also, when I blasted them, the wheel side looked like it had a kind of undercoating on it? Very rough textured and black as well. Any thoughts on what I should use on the tire side?

The inner fenders up to model year '68 should be body colour. Black inners started on '69s. The rough texture is undercoating. You can either strip them down, then decide if you want to leave them body colour or paint and add undercoating. If you are going to drive it on a lot of gravel/dirt roads, I would go with the undercoating.

NOS body parts of that vintage were often painted primer black. Not sure how your car could have come out of the LA assembly plant as they only made A / B and later E bodies during the 60's through the last year of production in 1970.

Maybe my mistake, I put the fender tag numbers into one of those search engines to decode and that is what it came up with. CG

The fender tag doesn’t tell you where the car was made.
    83 is 440 HP
5 is auto trans, not the LA plant.
    755 is the tires

We need the VIN, got and registration or title paperwork handy?

These inner fender filler pieces should be painted black. They were installed long after the car was painted, after all the side trim, emblems, antenna, etc, were installed on the car. Once the fillers were in place, they got a shot of undercoating that covered the seams and hardware.

Body looks straight & rust free. 83=440TNT 375HP. Rare car in a nice color, great find! If the inner fenders are original the left side should have the data plate riveted on. Probably someone just painted them black, no big deal. Keep us updated!

I see the error of my ways. The parts in question are not what you see from the engine compartment. They are below them, and attached to the wheel opening to keep crud off what we are referring to.

Correct! And they are always black, though I guess it's possible that some could have been in primer, but all I've ever seen is black.

Just to clear up any misunderstandings,,
Up to 68 the outer half of the front inner fender--which you do not see- was black.
The inner half that you see when you open the hood is body color.
    Cheers!!

Thanks for all comments. I get mixed up on inner fenders, outer, These are the inserts that are installed in the wheel well and I seem to remember they were black when I removed them almost 20 years ago! though my memory is not what it was! I have owned the car since 1986 and prior to that it belonged to a friend who was an uber collector with over 80 cars. It has been stored in a heated garage for the better part of the last 46 years. It has a total of 2200 miles on it since 1974. Now that I have some time and a couple of nickels saved up, it is going back on the road. I have a file of paperwork on the car that goes back to the late 60's as my friend was a stickler for provenance. Here are the specs:

    1967 Chrysler 300 Convertible
    Paint: JJ1 Mahogany
Black top, Black Buckets, Console, Auto, Perf Gauge
    440 TNT
Tilt Telescopic, Air Conditioning, dual mirror, dual headrests
Power Options: Top, Seats, Windows, Vents, Brakes, Trunk, Antennae,
    Tinted Windows, AM/FM radio,

I will post some pics as I go along, should be fun to get on the road again! CG
