Need a posi center section for my '65 Fury. Looking for one that's ready to go, bolt in and drive. The car has a nicely built 440 and a 4spd, so I prefer a 489 case.

Let me know what you have.

Thanks...

Why do you prefer a 489 case ?

Sorry for the wrong term. I'm aware they were called "Sure Grip", using "posi" is just a habit. So yes, I'm looking for a "Sure Grip" center section, or third member. 489 cases were the strongest of the 3 types, so I'd like one if I can get it. My engine is 500+ hp. I'd consider a 742. Thoughts on a 741?

I would actually think that the 742 is the strongest of the 3 but I’ve heard of guys flogging the 741’s on the quarter mile repeatedly without fail. They’re all good units but I would be with you in looking for a 489 or a 742. I don’t have any complete assemblies at the moment but I do have a nice empty 742 case.

I dead hooked a 741 for several years with 1.86 60' times. Was a 350hp engine but that's a quicker 60' than the casual car will ever do. A 741 isn't really that much smaller and they should have clutch type sure grips.

Ok, then I guess a 741 will do me as well. I just missed one on Craig's list.

So, if anyone has a 741/742/489 sure grip center section, please msg me.

489 cases use a crush sleeve i think. That's why some prefer the 742. 741 can still hold their own. Think they came in Abodys equipped with 8 3/4s.

I have a complete unmolested 742 center section. It has the strongest sure grip made . A dana power lok. stock gear ratio of 2.93 to 1 500.00 plus shipping from 14048 .

Of the 3 center sections, the 489 is the strongest. It has a 1.875 diameter tapered pinion shaft. The next strongest is the 742 which has a 1.75 diameter non tapered pinion shaft. The weakest is the 741 which has a1.375 diameter non tapered pinion shaft. The 741 is probably good for up 400 or so horsepower, at least in a relatively light car. That's what I have in my b body that is somewhere around 400-425 HP. So far I haven't broken it.
I hope that helps you.

The 742 center section is by far the strongest 8 3/4 center section made. The straight pinion has a much larger bearing with 55% more surface area . Think about it , when you accelerate all that torque is standing on the bearing. The 489 tapered pin is only 1.45 inches at the center of its bearing because its Tapered. The Dana Power -Lok is inherently stronger and provides better torque transmission to both axles. Its locking capabilty is also proportionate to the applied torque. The 489 Borg Warner unit is weaker but easier to use on the street. But when it breaks the car doesn't move. The Dana is far better for racing and is rebuildable.

Correction It should say 1.55 inches at the center of the bearing. The bottom line is this. Ma Mopar only went to the 489 case and Borg Warner Suregrip because .... its was cheaper.
