I came across this pic from my uncle, and am trying to identify the car behind him. I think it's a 60 Dodge he had before his 61 Plymouth.

It looks like a 1960 Dodge Dart Phoenix to me:

Could well be. I'm not up on the nuances of our Plodges. I just know he didn't have it long because of the /6, and he was disappointed with th e performance compared to the 57 Savoy he traded in. It was then replaced with a white on black 61 Fury with a V8. Unfortunately he passed last year and dad passed 5 years ago, so the only two who could fill in the blanks are no longer with us.

Is that an A/C car? The Phoenix you posted above does not have air ducts routed trough the dashboard.

It isn't possible to tell from the photo of the Phoenix. The a/c ducts such as you see on the Polara do also swivel down near flush with the top of the dash panel if so desired.

Those a/c ducts are really "cool" I have always thought. Here is a more clear photo of them on my 1962 Chrysler 300H:

It is the first car I ever restored - completed in 1978.

In ascending order, it was Seneca - Phoenix - Polara, correct? I've always loved the '60 Darts. There was an original triple blue Phoenix at the Palm Springs auction a few years ago that I drooled over.

don't forget the Pioneer model of the Dart...

The names Seneca, Pioneer, and Phoenix were sub-models of the Dart brand. The others brands in the 1960 Dodge line up were the mid range Matador and the top of the line Polara.

I knew I was missing something....thanks for the clarification!

And the one from the auction in the desert was a Pioneer, now that I found the photos. 2013....

@73Coupe

Also the DeSoto Diplomat was built with the Dart body during 1960, but that model was never available in the USA hence it was an export-only model.

Edit: in the 50s Diplomats were built using Plymouth bodies.

Actually the Plymouth-based export DeSoto dates back to 1937. The 1937 Plymouth came as P3 and P4 (DeLuxe). The 1937 DeSoto export six was SP3 and SP4 (DeLuxe). The Diplomat name was used starting with the 1949 models. The model numbers used the Plymouth number with an "S" added through 1957.

From 1937 to 1956 the front sheet metal was Plymouth with a DeSoto-like grille. For 1957-59 the Diplomat used the Firesweep front clip and became car line F for 1958. Thus the Plymouth 6, LP1-L, series was the Diplomat 6, LF1-L for DeSoto.

For 1960-61 the Diplomat was a Dart with DeSoto nameplates and side trim similar to the 1957-58 DeSotos. As DeSoto died in 1961, so did the Diplomat.

As DeSoto died in 1961, so did the Diplomat.

Don´t bet on that. Desoto Diplomat was built as a Dart-based model during yet one model year (1962) in South Africa.

``Die luukse De Soto deur Chrysler`` tells the ad.

The Diplomat was built in 1960 and 1961 based on the Dart. It was exported to various countries around the globe and were built in Detroit plus sedans built in Canada.

The 1962 DeSoto was a Chrysler South Africa special with DeSoto nameplates placed on Dodge Darts. They did the same with leftover 1961 Lancers - renamed them DeSoto Rebel.

Don't know about the "leftover" thing, looks like they were pushing the DeSoto Rebel as an upmarket vehicle. The interiors were nice and the instrument panels were RHD and based on the 1960-61 design.

First for the 1961 DeSoto Rebel

Most interesting and that really is something I never heard about before. I guess Rambler didn't serve the market due to the undisputed use of the Rebel Name.
Ford had to christen the Mustang officially as the T5 in Germany because two manufacturers already had that Name saved over there.
