The checkerboard pattern is not my work, thank god. The previous owner like chess maybe? The original color is olive green of some sort
Then leave it checkerboard, It's an improvement. ;)

Welcome. The quintessential Olive Drab. Used by Chrysler, AMC, International and the Military in the none gloss version of course. I had a 70 AMC Hornet and a 71 International 1100 4x4 both in that same green. It grows on you, but then I'm not a green hater like many on this board. You'll find a lot of resources here to bring her back to her glory if you so choose.
