On my 1970 Fury convertible, 318/904, someone cut the torque converter cover, so that it no longer bolted in back of the starter. I think the torque converter cover sometimes rattles against the flex plate.

The 904 torque converter covers that I have found seem to be broken in the same place above the starter

the 727 torque converters are different in that the metal is thicker above the starter

I'm having trouble finding a good 904 torque converter cover.
Questions for the experts:
I'm wondering if a 727 torque converter cover could be altered to fit?
I'm also wondering if a torque converter cover from an A 500 or one of the subsequent electronic controlled Magnum transmissions could work?
I have to admit that I've never thought much about the difference between the bolt pattern of SB 727 Bell housing and a 904 Bell housing. Any explanations of the difference are also greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There is no difference in the bolt pattern between small block transmissions, the 727 unit should bolt right in. If you do have a metallic tink tink tink coming from that area though and it is intermittent then check carefully for a cracked flex plate when you take off your old cover.

Thanks for the tip Gary. I'll definitely look. If there are no rub/abrasion marks on the back of my cover, the flex plate is certainly suspect. This job may have gone from simple to several hours work. :mad:If it makes any difference, I hear the sound more after the engine warms up, but it is very sporadic.

Great! I'm very interested
I forgot. I brought those to the shop a couple months ago as I had a local guy needing one. I have a bunch. The longer ones have S/6 727 written on one. They do not line up with the other two. So I’m thinking you need the shorter one. They are different also but line up correctly. Let me know if you see the one you need. All are good

Small Block Mopar, 727 Transmission Inspection Cover Fits Dodge Or Plymouth | eBay
Hi Bob. On ebay, 2 sellers are emphatic that 904 and 727 are different. I would also guess that the 904 is the shorter one. But, as I said in the OP, mine is cut, so I can't measure it. Maybe @Wollfen Gary can help. Otherwise, I'll do like @jct says and take one of each.

Will this work. This a 904 trans. Not bent quite the same. Also I can see which one of those covers fits.

Thanks for checking to see which cover fits.
If the brace mounts at the trans below and to the inside of the starter and mounts to the engine in front of the starter on a small block v8, I guess it might work. What year & model, engine is it out of?
The pics I took were from a 727. You're right that the shape is different. Left side brace is on right in this pic I found.

Left side brace on 727, mounted. (2nd trans cooling line not yet installed)

Bottom line, I'm willing to pay for it as long as it went from 904 trans to SB-V8 and was on the left side, ... especially since with you test fitting the covers, I don't have to pay for an extra cover.
Thanks again, Ben

Side view of both 727 braces, left side in front. For anyone reading this, I'm missing the left side brace on my 318/904 70 Fury Conv. Bob is helping me replace it, to add stability and help get rid of a sporadic deep rattle. See pic in original post

Let me pull that brace off & measure it better & get a better pic. I cannot remember what this trans came out of.

Here is that brace. I took it off. 10.5 inches hole to hole. Both of these covers fit my 904. Take your pic
Hi Bob
Brace: 10.5" is the right length, so I'd like to have it
Cover: I'd like to have the lighter colored cover that has the opening for the inspection plate.
You can PM me your email and price and I'll paypal you the money. Thanks, Ben

P.S. was the shorter cover plate the one that fit?

Yes I checked & the others are for a 727 Big Block. After the race I’ll get you a quote. Won’t be long
