Hi folks! Just thought I’d share a little update on me. Today I went and talked to a gentleman who does some of the best body work in the country. For example, people bring their cars from California to have him work on them. I talked to him and told him I wanted to learn from him. I stated that I would show up every day, on time, and do anything he asked of me. I also offered to work for free until he decided he would like to hire me or not. And well, I got the job! Or, err, internship? Anyways, I am very excited and hope to learn as much as I can. Thanks for reading and wish me luck :)
Here is an example of one of the cars he built:

Best of luck with your internship! Many younger folks could learn a lesson from your drive and work ethic!!

Congratulations on showing good old American initiative in how you got the job.
Love to see this kind of stuff happen.

Sheet metal work is a "lost art" that seems to be resurfacing in the custom and high-end restoration shops. Which is great. It's one thing to "peck and dolly" a panel back to what it started as, but to make a copy on an English Wheel (and such) can be very rewarding.

    Congrats and best of luck!

Sounds like a great opportunity for you, I wish I had learned more about it. I know enough to get into trouble.

Congratulations and good luck! Nice to see someone willing to work and learn in lieu of getting paid, plus wanting to learn a trade. Even better, you are willing to get dirty and you are excited to learn.

Good news! I’m officially hired! My boss came in and asked if I’d be willing to come back next week, and I replied “I’d love to if you’d be willing to have me”. My boss says “if we’d be willing to have you?” To which my coworker (who’s won many awards, been featured in 17 magazines, and is inducted in the mini truck hall of fame) jumped in and said “Yes, you will hire him”. I’m pretty thrilled :)

Good deal, glad to hear everything worked out for you! You give hope to everyone to see there are still people willing to learn and start a new journey. Anytime you have a chance to learn from skilled people please do it, especially if it is on someone else’s dime. Even if it may be a skill you think you may not need. Life happens, things change and you may have a chance to use that skill you learned years later. Sorry, I apologize if I sound like I am preaching. That is the last thing I want to do. Let me close in saying; enjoy the experience you have in front of you while learning on your journey, plus congratulations you earned it!
I was very fortunate in my early career to work with some very skilled people. I learned more from working with them and the mistakes I made than any textbook or class I could have taken. Keep us updated on your journey.
