An interesting video of the Gremlin / Hornet assembly plant around 1975. At 14 minutes in, they're installing a vinyl roof. Apparently, that was a very time-consuming process.

I toured the Ford plant in St Paul as part of an auto shop high school class in this same era 1973-74.

I remember the shop teacher telling us that if you want a job with decent pay, and a pension and don't mind putting a nut on a shock absorber for the next 30-35 years then this is the job for you.

I toured a GM plant in Baltimore in 1978 or so. After that, I rushed home and started studying even harder for my engineering degree! :wideyed:

Worked at Dodge Main during summer breaks from college.
Most mind-numbing job I've ever had. And summer help worked a different job each day filling in for absentees.
The only position that was not boring was driving cars off end of line to shipping prep outside. The ones that wouldn't start made it interesting.

Wow, how times have changed. No safety equipment for the workers. No safety goggles, people wearing street clothes on the line, I'm sure no safety shoes. Smoking on the workroom floor. The amazing part to me is watching how people really had to work in those factories back then, no robotics! Placing the glass, body panels manually. Hand spraying the paint with no protection at all. A red car being sprayed, while a green car is sprayed within a few feet of it on the same line. Can you imagine today's millennial spoiled brats having to work like this? They could never use both hands to work, one hand would have to hold their phone to take selfies to show how "hard" they have it on Instagram or Snapchat.

Yep I didn't apply at the Ford plant, instead entering the machining trade.
45 years of that the end of this month...

I love seeing them align the headlights so fast.
