Hemmings Muscle Machines, quality rag BTW, has a article on a 512" based 440. It boast 585 hp @5400, and 640 ftlbs at 4100 rpm. Looks very sort of stock on the outside and used a hydraulic cam, normal oil pan. They brought the budget in at less than $6000, nice. Some prices are in line some are not but nothing crazy wrong. 15517308378422031144740.jpg
There is a couple omissions and some parts I would put on the table at Carlisle swap meet. Namely the distributor (no vacuum advance), and the fuel pump is IMHO not enough to feed almost 600 hp in a actual car. I would spend a few extra dollars on a quality dampener.
Omissions include port work $$$$ and jetting changes (no way a stock Eddy 750 is right OOTB on a 500+ inch engine)
Good article and shows what low flow small port heads, and how big a hydraulic cam can be hidden by big cubic inches.
You cheapskates will have to go pick up a copy for all the details.

What are the cam specs? With the power peak so "reasonable", I'd expect the torque peak to be more like 3500rpm rather than 4100rpm? Or were they using the carb to be the limiting factor in the top end power area?

There's got to be a HUGE amount of velocity in those ports every time a piston goes down!

Getting to where you've got to have 800+ horsepower and 1000 lbs/ft torque just to go to the corner store for some milk? Not unlike Chevy guys used to have to have a steel crankm 4 bolt mains to do the same thing 25 years ago?

Q: How much power can you make with a BB?
A: How much money you got.
You dump 10 grand into an engine and a doctor with a checkbook pulls up with a Hellcat Crate Engine in his Cuda.

    It never ends...

Regardless, nothing like building your own. Thanks for the tip on the article. I'll go down to BookSmith and read it there.

Nice build. Can't beat that amount of power for $6k.

I'm sure the article has a dyno report. I sure would like to see a video of the dyno run and results.

It makes over 600 ftlbs from the basement all the way to mid 4000 rpm then it falls off. The cylinder heads are the limiting factor. OOTB they claim 250+ cfm which will not get you much over 500 hp on that bottom end, so the port work must be more than a bowl clean up. Porting by someone with a brain in their head cost $$$, this is not mentioned in the budget

    This has me thinking.
What do you the think the numbers today would read for a new 69 440 HP on the stand.

Another way to put it is, if you could find a new 69 GTX, pull the engine, and put it on the dyno used in the above article.

Is it a Monday engine or a Wednesday engine. Anal retentive shift or the yeah whatever man shift. Inspection Supervisor that is stepping out on his wife, or the one who is happy with his life?
Nick's garage did one of these, and went from some minor speed parts back to stock manifolds and carb and power came right in to factory number with no accessories. Add in a straight blade direct drive fan behind a 22" rad non-a/c car can use up 30 hp at 6000 rpm. With power steering and and 45 amp alternator you would be lucky to shove 330 into the converter, 290 at the rear wheels.....low 14 second car.
The drag strip does not lie. If it's pulling a little better because of Wednesday, anal retentive crew, happy supervisor engine you will get a 101-103 mph trap speed. A Monday, yeah whatever crew, with the preoccupied supervisor you get a 98-99 mph car.

    Pretty similar to my 9:1 493. 600 ft/lbs at 4000. 500 +/- at 5300 with an MP509 cam.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that because you can rebuild a 440 to stock 69 HP specs for about 3 grand.

These 1.3L DOHC Variable Cam Timing Multi-cylinder Activation Dual Intercooled Turbocharged Supercharged Time Bombs and their 12 ,speed dual clutch transmissions pushing 300 hp kill me.
They detonate and the car goes to the Crusher.

Just think what a 511 cube big block Dodge could do with all that technology!
