Blowing Out 440 Oil Filter Gasket :/

I have a 1968 440 TNT motor I'm doing a first start on.
After several attempts it would start and quickly shut down.
After a couple more attempts it blew the oil filter gasket out and 2 qts of oil on the floor.
So What's up, and also it shuts down right after releasing the key at start up.

Have you got a pcv valve and or any valve cover breathers?

If filter blows out The gasket then venting isn’t the problem, it has too much oilpressure. Do you have a manual gauge o it yet?

Ballast resistor bad or no power on IGN 1 wire will make it die after releasing key.​

If this car sat for a long time, the pressure relief valve in the oil pump is probably stuck shut and is causing too much oil pressure. You need to fix that problem before trying to start the engine as you can twist off the oil pump drive shaft with excessive oil pressure. Most of the time if the relief valve is stuck, it is rusted up and stuck to the pump case and the oil pump should be replaced. The other problem as noted is probably a power failure to the ballast resistor or a bad ballast resistor. Quick test for a bad resistor is to take a pair of alligator clips and jump past the resistor, if the car then stays running, the resistor is shot.

Thanks for the help.
I was dreading the thought of changing the oil pump, but I just realized the oil pump is on the outside of the block. That's awesome, 5 Stars for the Mopar engineers.

Sounds silly but make sure there isn't two gaskets there. I don't see how the gasket in the filter could get blown out.

I always check for the old gasket, the fram filter has a pretty thick gasket.

Wait a minute !! Fram filter? Fram filters are of very poor quality. Get a NAPA Gold filter. It's a WIX. Or get a WIX filter directly from Summit. What kind / weight oil are you using? You can get high ZDDP Penn Grade 15W-40 or 20W-50 oil from Summit too. Is this engine a new / rebuilt engine, or is it an engine that has been sitting for a long time? If the engine has been sitting for a long time, there are several procedures you need to perform, before you try to start it.

Dave you were right on two counts.
Bypassed ballast resistor and it runs without stopping. Pulled oil pump and sure enough the relief piston was stuck closed, got it freed up and put it back on the engine. New pump is coming this week. Engine fired up and runs very well after its long slumber. Next it needs some carb work and a radiator.
