For what reason would the tail shaft of a 727 explode at a cruising speed?

Just the tailshaft?

There's not much going on inside. The governor and the speedometer gear. I suppose the governor could come apart... But I've never seen that happen.

I've also heard of bad motor mounts and a stiff trans mount causing cracking.

I was told if not the U joint then bearings or governor .
Horrible feeling at 65 mph, pictures to follow , Tomorrow .

Yea, A u-joint or drive shaft problem could probably cause it too.

Sorry to hear that Dave!

I would replace the U-joints and have the driveshaft spin balanced too.

That sucks. I'm replacing my u joints this week, been needing to do so anyways.

No warning? Just exploded? Usually a very bad violent vibration for a few seconds and a lot of noise.

Nope, I just commented to Diane how well the car is riding, nice and smooth....A few minutes go by

BOOM!

Then the VIOLENT vibration and I mean VIOLENT. Smoke out of the back of the car, that was the transmission fluid dumping out. Not sure how the floor pans are , I was amazed that the gas tank, rear and exterior metal and trim suffered NO damage

Ive broken U joints before, engine mounts, had rears lock up while going down the road. This was much worse .... My first thought was something let go on the front end, like a joint or TRE
