Wow... A 3% tariff on imported parts.

I don't think that's gonna stop any of us. If I bought $1000 of imported parts for my cars, it would be $30 in tariff. No one will ever even notice unless you pointed it out.

That's the current rate. The proposed rate is 25%.

    Ahhh ... I didn't watch the video.

25% is going to be an issue.

25% would be a pretty good jump. One the other hand, I routinely pay at least that much more for quality American made parts.

I for one am not going to lose a lot of sleep if all that cheap Chinese made crap that is poor quality or does not fit right suddenly disappears.

Given that any proposed tariffs are in response to tariffs imposed on American products in foreign markerts; may I ask where that outrage (or CBS news item) has been hidden? This story is as dumb as the feigned outrage over $.06 cents added to the cost of a six pack.

A beer can cost about 10 cents to make, the Beer Institute said.

In the unlikely event that the can is made entirely of imported aluminum — no recycled or domestic content — the 10 percent tariff might add a penny to the cost, or 6 cents to a six-pack. That’s probably not enough to drive away many beer drinkers.

    Source

But I will remember to consider the source of this story before purchasing Haggerty insurance coverage.

    You may now resume...

And that is the end result. You, the consumer and taxpayer, will be the one that incurs any extra costs. The businesses just tack on whatever they need to and don't lose any sleep over it. The tariffs (taxes) collected by the government are just going to go into general revenue, never to be seen again by the average person. Interesting side note - the U.S. tariff on imported Canadian aluminum ends up costing the Canadian consumer more for canned beverages after you sell the finished cans back to us. Your government collects a tax on our aluminum used to make a product that ends up back here. I suppose that if we were to manufacture all our own cans it would reduce the amount of money coming in to your government, as well as taking work away from your plants. Not sure where the win is.

The commercial window industry has taken a 5% jump because of this. It won't last. I bet most countries are getting ready to blink. I think that whatever it costs to send US products to a country shoukd set the matching costs

Scary thought, all those parts manufacturers who used to make quality stuff here suddenly having the option of doing it again! A lot of them just gave up because they could not compete with slave labor in China.

Not only that but 90% of their inventory as well. I'm on my third cheepo impact wrench and the warranty just expired. Next one will be an IR which I should have done in the first place. My last IR went fifteen years.

The only win will be that they will have to hire a small army of government officials to administer the tariffs. They will be for sure under worked and over paid, so it will be a win for them.

As I see it, the issue with parts for our cars is they aren't going to bring production of repop or older parts back to the US. You might see the suppliers to the auto manufacturers bring the work back here along with some aftermarket parts, but I doubt if they will even consider bringing short run production parts back here. It won't be worth their time and money.

The tooling for old car parts won't come back from Mexico or China. If there aren't enough sales to keep production up, the tooling will be scrapped.
