My 1969 Polara 500 is a Dealer Demonstrator, so what exactly is that?

It used to mean the cars had some mileage put on them by the dealer but never sold. Used to get a heavier discount over new.

Dealer demo meant exactly that. This were cars on hand at the dealer for the general public to test drive. They were often used as salesman or employee personal cars too.
As @commando1 said, you could buy them cheaper because of the mileage and often never registered so they are technically new cars when sold.

They were typically well equipped high end 'show off' cars for dealers or sales people to drive so the public would see the new models and options out and about.
Like DM27L9D100582, CE23N1C107019 (the 1971 Newport with sunroof that @saforwardlook and I teamed up to get a couple of years ago) has a Y13 code. As @MrMoparCHP noted, the Y13 code is on the build sheet but not on the fender tag.
Hmm I just learned something from this. Never knew the cars were slotted as “Dealer Demos” from the factory line! Always thought they were just plucked off the dealer lot as the BOSS saw fit. I figured they were, for the most part “LOADED” , as to show the public what all the Bells and Whistles looked like in that model yr car.
Now was (Y13) code used throughout all models and year cars? Or when did in start / end?
I work for a BMW dealer, it works the same way today. There are different production status types "customer", "Stock", "demo", "fleet" etc. Ofcourse you can also make a demo from a stock vehicle - but that way you will never find out by decoding the VIN
And being technically still a “new” vehicle, any rebates, employee discounts etc would apply. These cars were often a better deal than the Lynch Road lot where the nicer employee lease vehicles went for employee family purchase.
One thing I read somewhere was that if the car racked up some miles while it was in the dealerships care that when it was sold it still carried the New care warrantee.
My Ragtop is a Y13 as well. Loaded up with almost everything.

power brakes, power steering, console, tinted glass, locking gas cap, remote mirrors, undercoating, bumper guards, sill moldings (all nice to have options that jack up the price of an entry level car)
H51 A/C. Not common on A bodies let alone an A53 car $$$
AM/FM radio. In an A body. Not common.

Only if they were ordered that way. Load them up with options to show off all the goodies available.
HA! The Formula S package includes Red Streak tires and they dinged the dealer for another $45.45 for a T73 option. (Red Streak tires)
My question would be if the dealer got discounts or incentives to take a dealer demo.
I always just thought it was a car that the dealer picked off his floor plan, but now seeing this, it opens up other questions, like was it really a dealer's car?
They would sell executive cars at New Process Gear (here in Syracuse) a couple times a year. Now that I think on it, I seem to remember something about demos being sold too, but my memory is hazy. The story of someone test driving and flipping a 440 6bbl Cuda during one of those sales is a local legend. Right in front of the plant too...
@69CoronetRT is that Y13 code also displayed on the fender tag or just on the broadcast sheet?
