It's amazing to see the "technology" from that era compared to today. Even today, so much has to go right to keep so much from going wrong.
I got to see FiFi when she was in Camarillo. That is one big beautiful bird. It’s so cool some genius figured out they could get it back in the air by running the Skyraider engines. Kinda like a C body with a hellcat engine swap. Thanks that was pretty cool.
Ironic as just this past Veterans Day a old friend of mine posted up a picture on FaceBook of her father when he was a Captain of a B17 and also a group photo of the crew. He flew 36 missions, and was a captain at 21 years of age.
Yep. They figured out that some Vietnam era skyraiders could give up their engines and made the cowls fit and look correct. That big bird has way more horsepower now than a stock one. Not sure how many others are still flying. FiFi is a the only one I’ve ever seen. It’s cool that the CAF mechanics are as passionate about their planes as we are about our cars. The Camarillo Air Show has a pretty neat little car show too.
I checked she’s not coming to my neck of the woods next year but some of you guys might get a chance to do a walk thru. Ride alongs are $300 to a whole lot of money. The walk thru was only about 20 bucks and all that money goes back into the plane. Definitely worth a look.
