How important is brake booster rubber rear boot?

Hi All,

How important is it to replace a rubber rear boot on brake booster? It has come loose on one of the cars I own. Is it to keep dirt/dust from interior getting into back of booster or does it have a more crucial role?

It is a dust shield, nice to have but not essential unless you are getting lots of dust in the passenger compartment from holes in the floor boards. Replacements are still available but run around $60.
