In-line automatic transmission fluid filter!?

Hey Guys, My 1962 Dodge Custom 880, 361ci, automatic has a metal, in-line ATF filter. It has to be factory because it has fittings at each end that the return line fastens to. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Any clue as to what is inside this filter? Is it paper type material or possibly wire mesh/screen or other non-paper material? My bandsaw saw mill has a 10 micron glass bead hydraulic filter. I guess it could be something similar. If it is not paper maybe I could flush it out and re-use it!? I tried, in vain, to find a new one but had no luck except for a much smaller WIX plastic outside, paper inside filter with "slip-on" connections with a couple of short hoses and four clamps. Bob

I believe this is what you are looking for.

The parts book lists this as a "strainer", it also lists a "filter" that it says is attached to the trans. pan, I can't say that I have ever seen one attached to the pan, and the parts book doesn't show it. I also don't know what is inside of them.

Beautiful picture! Thanks! No, I cannot read a part number on the old filter. The one in the picture you sent looks like the one on my car. The one the guy has for sale on e-bay looks like the right one, too. I don't know how you found it but I'm glad you did. I'm tempted to reuse the old one but will probably bite the bullet and buy a new one at an outrageous price! Cheaper than a rebuild! Try scuffing up the surface of the old filter with a scotchbrite pad to find the numbers.

Like I said. $15 .. actually $14.84 but I rounded up. But maybe it costs more to ship to Kansas. ~ $40.0 to get what you need for a 52 year old car doesn't sound crazy to me.

The factory installed filters were black. The aftermarket filters are orange.

Greasemonkeyman, Rust has taken its toll and the part number is not legible, but have received part numbers, including Chrysler, Fram and Wix, from another source and am going to get one from my local O'Reilly's for less than the guy on flea-bay! It is also available from NAPA and CarQuest. Thanks to everyone who tried to help! Bob

I know what the mark-up is on things. I can buy it at my local O'Reilly's for less than that, now that I have obtained the WIX, Fram and CarQuest part numbers. It was unnecessary to make a copy of the flea-bay ad. I guess I looked at so many ads I remembered the wrong shipping price. $14.84 is still too much for shipping. It shouldn't cost more than $6 -$7 to ship. Man...one guy has 3500+ posts vs one guy with 16....I'm new here as well and have been on many car forums....there IS a certain pecking order in this arena, my suggestion to OP would be to ask questions, absord the info and not make waves if he needs "help" with his car. I am a former Pontaic guy, finding out I know little to nothing about Mopars, let alone C bodies...in every forum, there seems to always be a few guys that rub some people the wrong way, but they are usually the most helpful as well....just need to grow some thicker skin until you become acclimated to it...just my 2¢...Kel
