what are the pros and cons of using a universal air cleaner assembly. Is there hoses and stuff I need to worry about. 1965 chrysler newport 383cu 6.7L engine

Hoses? Maybe in California? What I'd look into is the quality of the filter media and is a replacement readily available. And whether or not it fits my application including hood clearance.

On a 65 I don't think hoses are an issue. Make sure you get one with adequate airflow and as mentioned, easily available replacement filters.

CA did require a smog conversion that involved running a ported breather with a hose into the air cleaner, but given the age of the car that should not be a problem now. The factory breather has good flow characteristics and you will not gain anything by going to an after market breather.

Thank you, I had the original assembly but some how its gone now. That the reason for my question. Should I fork out the big money and get the original or go with after market. According to the diagrams I found I think the original had some sensor in it and it also had a couple hoses. Can I get rid of the hose going into the porter breather ? I think it also had a vacuum hose going to the carburetor what about that one ? Sorry not a mechanic learning as I go

My guess is the standard air cleaner was retro fitted to California standards in the field. Unless it was a dual snorkel unit you should be able to find a standard unit pretty reasonably priced.
