Winter is here so I need a project, last year I rebuild the rear end with a SURE GRIP and new gears, bearings and brakes. This year I am on to the motor. I will have tons of ridiculous questions with the answers right in front of me, so forgive upfront. This is what I am starting with. A block that has been line honed, dipped, and new cam bearings installed. It sat for the guy for about a year before he sold it to me. A little surface rust that I cleaned up with a wire wheel and got a ball hone for the cylinders. Wish me luck.

Looks like a good start, standard bore?

I'm looking forward to this project and all the "ridiculous questions" because they will probably answer a lot of ridiculous questions I would have to ask when I do my engine ;)

Got a few hours tonight in the garage. Little degreaser and wire wheel, some mineral spirits and primer.

Got a couple hours in this week in between work, teaching, taking a class, and kids sports. Drilled out the 1/8 inch tapping for the water temp probe to 3/8 in case I go with a mechanical gauge. Primed and assembled the water pump. Drilled out exhaust manifold heat riser and filled the hole. Looking to sandblast the manifolds and paint and bake them on the grill with VHT 1300-2000. Ring filer came today, so hopefully this weekend I can take care of the rings and start putting the internals back together.

I was able to hone the cylinders and ring the pistons today. Got the crank in and so far everything speced out good. .028 top ring, .017 second ring, plasicguage on the crank right at .002, piston to wall clearance of .003. Rear seal good to go. This took me all day, because this is the first engine I built from scratch, so I would check and recheck and check some more. Ring filling took up most of the time. But I was in no hurry considering it was 2 degrees out and I had nowhere else to be.

Looks great! What did you use for filing the rings? Just a small key file or one of these special piston ring files?
