Story on the Monaco, told by the owner’s son Terry Mateer:
Here's a few more pictures of Dad's '71 Monaco he bought brand new. I've seen this country from the backseat of this thing. It's the 1st time it's been uncovered in probably 8 years.
We were talking about it & he called this a "Demonstrator Car" & said it was special ordered by a salesman there in Terre Haute. I'm assuming this was the specially prepared car the guy was going to use to sell the Monaco to potential customers.
The story of how Dad got it: He'd special ordered a '71 Pontiac Bonneville back in late '70. It had all the doo-dads & was a light metallic, much like the GA4, but in a light Green. The color was stunning as was the car, but it wiped the cam on it's maiden voyage about 60 miles out of town as we were headed to Ohio. The dealer did their part but about 3 months later the transmission failed when he was headed home from a meeting in Indianapolis. He worked for the G.C. Murphy Company back in the day. He went to his friend at the dealership the next morning & told him the car's a lemon, he doesn't want it anymore & to make it happen. Old boy told Dad to take a walk w/him & to go out & pick any car off the lot. As soon as they came out of the door, there sat the Dodge on the carrier. Dad saw it & knew he wanted it. The guy took him back inside & started the paperwork. Three days later Dad gets a call at home from the salesman who'd special ordered it. He'd just returned from vacation & couldn't find the Monaco. I was only 6 at the time, but I can still remember Dad saying "Well, it's mine now, isn't it?"
First time I laid eyes on it, it was from the rear. I came from out beside a friend's house & as I walked around his house, our driveway came into view. I remember thinking to myself "Dad bought a Charger!" as I was running across the road to greet him for lunch.
Wish now I'd taken my good SONY camera with me as I'm not impressed w/the low quality pictures my cell phone took. Hope you enjoy...
