when I replaced the timing chain I put a new heater hose nipple in the water pump housing. Now it leaks. What's the best way to seal the leaky nipple ; pipe dope on the threads, thread tape, or silicone or RV sealant? Paul

Is it chrome-plated?

Teflon tape has issues. Has to be "aimed" the correct direction in relation to the threads, so it does not unwind when tightened. It can also decrease the needed torque spec due to it being Teflon. The Teflon pipe sealer can be a better choice.

Normally, a thin coat of Permatex #2 on the threads would work well. Just enough to result in a thin bead at the top of the threads and the casting. Just enough torque for good thread engagement and no more. I would suspect this product will be the "default mode" for many people, over the many decades it has been in use.

Black, high-heat silicone sealer can be an alternative, sometimes. Same thing, be concerned with the amount of thread engagement. Not too much, not too little. Mimic what the factory did in that respect.

OF COURSE, having CLEAN threads in the casting and on the pipe nipple threads is important!

Enjoy!

Thanks CB ; I think I'll try the sealant instead of the pipe dope or the thread. I wasn't aware they used the sealant at the factory. Paul

if you're using an RTV sealant the threads on both nipple and housing need to be clean and dry....I also like to give the silicone overnight to dry before adding coolant....teflon tape is more forgiving and can be used if there's still some antifreeze on the threads...but its also a thread lubricant and you risk overtightening the fitting and cracking the housing if you use too much muscle

Don't use silicone, Permatex 2 is great.
