My good friend Larry @Lftovrs dropped off his 77 NYB today for us to do the provincial inspection. Beautiful survivor car but has me stumped on a couple things…

The brake pedal has a trailer brake addition to it. How does this work? Also has auto park brake I have never seen one so any info from the collective is appreciated.

That brake controller is my favorite. Simple install and works in synch with tow vehicle brakes. By "rolling" your foot up or down on the control, trailer brakes can be modulated. Lindsay

Vac operated parking brake releases when shift lever moves from "P". In the FSM.

That’s what I said. It has some kinda park brake setting that releases the park brake when you put it in reverse. It is quite the contraption on the drivers rear drum. I’ve never encountered it before. Oh and the ATC II doesn’t work of course

Unless something's different on the formals, all of that automatic release mechanism is just above the parking brake pedal, part of that assy. Picture of the rear drum items?

I'm amazed that the acrylic steering wheel isn't cracked or has chunks missing out of it. Must be the cold weather up north....

The auto parking brake has its troubles too. I a lot of times it won't release after being applied. You will notice that it doesnt have a mechanical parking brake release handle. You will need the FSM to get you through the manual procedure to release the parking brake.

It seems to work ok on this car. Vacuum operated and disengages in any forward gear so far....

Now the trailer brake is the unknown .....

Oh. . . It just "needs charged."

Yeah, even my grandpa's 12,825 (yes actual mileage - he ordered and bought it new) survivor '77 New Yorker automatic parking brake release just started acting up last year and this spring was hissing pretty good when we drove it. If it's not too difficult to fix or replace, I'd like to help him out. The guy's going to be 90 next month so needless to say I can get under the dash quite a bit easier than he can even though he is in fantastic shape for his age. Has anyone fixed or replaced these? My idea was to use some soap bubbles to find where the vacuum leak is and go from there.

My ‘67 Imps have the auto brake release but the pin in the steering column that operates it in my silver car sheared off so I need to fix it next time I have the column out. Pretty flat around here though so it never gets used unless by accident in which case there’s an unmarked manual release lever under dash next to the pedal.
Is the trailer brake on this car a factory option?

FYI on Formal Auto Parking brake release, it is easy to manually disengage it.

There is a mini foot pedal on the assembly up high that you can use to manually disengage the brake if the vacuum system fails.

You are right....if you know where it is. I had to climb under the dash and figure it out the first time.

Same here.
The difference now is I can't even climb under the dash anymore

The hissing is probably a hole in the diaphragm of the vacuum motor unless a hose has dried out and split. I'm not sure if any other generic Chrysler motors will interchange though.

The hissing sound comes from the vacuum actuator that is a plastic lever operated gizmo that snaps
onto the steering column which releases the vacuum when shifted out of park or neutral...

Have to replace the front parking brake (e-brake) cable and the new cable does not come with the "squeeze"-type retainer that holds the end of the e-brake in place at the pedal. Any ideas how to hold the new one in place? I've attached a couple of pics of the old-style clip and the new end without a clip
