Hey Guys, Can anyone tell me if a Mopar CASTING NUMBER, 1851898 intake would be any good to put on my 1968 Newport 383? One thing I would like to do before spring is to swap the 2bbl for a good 4bbl setup.I really don't have the money to spend on new stuff. What would be a good used carb to fit on this stock car?Are the old Carter AFB's any good or should I look for a used Holley? Also, what about a Carter Thermoquad #6-2472....there is one on Ebay for $50?

Boy, that's an oldie. And in nice shape. To someone doing an obsessively correct engine detail, it's worth a few bucks.
But it's a limited market. Start advertising it now and you may get enough dough for it by the time you're ready to swap.

It is on Ebay...not mine.It is from a 1959-60 383 4 bbl.Would this manifold work well or should I wait for a used Edelbrock Performer?Also...should I look for a Carter TQ or would an AVS or AFB be better?Just something that will run a stock motor smoothly without fiddling with it all the time.Your help is much appreciated!!!

That manifold will work but a later one would would probably get you better performance. Everybody has there own preferences on what kind of carb to use, if you're on a strict budget and looking for a used one I would just try to find one of any of the above in the best condition possible. It's kind of a crapshoot buying a used carb that you can just bolt on and go.

All the Edelbrock fanbois will get their BVD's tied up in a knot over this but I'll stand by my words.
The best manifold for:
1. Ease of installation with zero linkage problems
2. Smoothest idle
3. Maximum vacuum at low RPM
4. Bang for the buck
5. No air cleaner housing clearance problems
6. Best fuel economy
7. Cold weather starting

is a late 60's factory B-block 4 barrel manifold. And they are cheap and plentiful.

Ok, haters. Bring it on....

RE: The carb.
I thing a carb original to your car is best.
Not an off the shelf rebuilt from XYZ Carb Repair and Vinyl Siding, Inc. but one expertly restored (not rebuilt) by a specialist. And it will probably cost more than a Summit Edelbrock or Holley but those carbs out of the box suck anyway...
They are Universal carbs meaning that they were not designed for any specific car in the Universe.

No argument from me, agreed 100%!

I would get a used dual plane intake which will flow better then the original intakes and be lighter. If you want the intake to heat up the carb for good winter time running make sure the one you choose has the heat crossover .. most do. A used low rise dual plane intake should be under $150 depending on what you get.

Just paint it to match your engine and cruise happily.

I personally like carter or eddy carbs and AFB, AVS and thermo quads are all good and I've used some Holley's but my experience or lack of it .. I could never get a Holley to run right after a rebuild but Carters AFB and AVS were easy.

Later thermo quads have a lot of vacuum fittings but you can plug them off. I would look for a good used edelbrock. I bought a 750 electric choke that is almost new shipped to me + carb tuning kit shipped to my door for $200. You can probably find one for ~ $175 or rebuild an original which go for around $35-50 unless it's something special.

I can't argue with that either Stan. They work well but I'd probably go for a 70 - 71 ish model if using an orig iron intake and presented a few choices. The carb mounting area doens't have the four holes .. two open slots and they are less restrictive. There are plenty of them all right.

I absolutely wound not buy the one in the pic above unless it's correct for your car and you want to go that route mr onetwo

If you have to have it shipped the price of an aluminum and a stocker might start to converge unless someone gives you the iron one which I imagine is entirely a possibility. Anyone who has more than just one car and minimal extra parts has probably 2-10 of those late 60's early to mid 70's intakes. I probably have ~ 10 myself and about the same number of carbs .. carter and holley

I have one similar to the one in the first pic, from about '58 or 9. If anybody is interested let me know.

Hey onetwo,

If you're coming to good guys or Nats, I have a couple TQ's sitting around...

I was always a holley fan but with high gas price you really need every mpg. Have been getting good results with eddy 750 on my brother in laws car but it does take some effort. Athermo quad is a great carb and cheap but later leanburns can have ahost of issues no ported spark vacuum and are pretty lean on secondaries foranything other than completely stock, with no jets availible on secondary you are making your own.

I'll trade you for some 67 Polara taillight lenses...

I have a 72 & a 73. Sounds like maybe not a good fit for you though.
