    Doesn't really matter why.

Chuck the leaking gauge in the trash and either install an electric one or go by the factory gauge if it still works. Pumping oil into the interior of the car is a bad idea.

The plastic line to the gauge is leaking... Not surprising. Should be able to get a replacement line and fittings, but that is why I use electric gauges.

Check the fitting at the back of the gauge to be sure it is tight. If it is tight, odds are the diaphragm in the gauge has ruptured and you need a new gauge.

Clean it off, tip the gauge up so the line and fitting is the lowest point, start the car and. See where the leak is.

Get a copper line kit, very solid and reliable. Replace the plastic line, prone to leaks.

Mechanical gauges are superior to electric in my book.

I agree with John & Jeff and would get an electric gauge.

My Pinto used to blow oil pressure gauges on a regular basis because it would pin the gauge when the engine was cold. On that car the ash tray was right under the oil press gauge, so you could open it up and stick a paper towel in there to catch the little stream of oil running down the dash. They were RAC gauges that my father would buy at K-mart.

A guy at my tech school installed a custom console in his Monte Carlo and had the oil line come off the back of the gauge. Made a mess and ruined his carpet. That incident convinced me that oil didn't belong on the interior side of the firewall.

Don't know what brand of mechanical oil gauge you are using but don't use a cheapy one. Good chance it's not accurate anyways. I use mechanical oil gauge in my Omni but a good one from Autometer not their base cheap ones. Pro Comp I believe. I use electric Autometer gauges in my Fury .

I like mech gauges...w copper or steel lines. Those plastic ones are for the birds. Glad to see you're rolling drip free....
