In looking for clips I ran across these that had been repaired. At first I thought it was electrical wire but upon a closer look I could see it was just plastic rod. It looks like they just drilled the clip and glued the rod in, did the job, maybe wire like a paperclip could be used?

IMO I'm thinking the pieces of plastic would be better. The paper clip will rust, may also scratch the paint causing body rust and easier to glue plastic to plastic.

I've been scheming on how to fix similar clips for my '73 side molding too.... I was looking for some spring wire that I could heat, bend, and press into the plastic clip body. Recently when changing the wiper blades on my truck, stainless inserts included with the replacement were not needed and I might try those. they are flat and about 3/32" wide, and have spring-like qualities.
