Preventing paint damage during reassembly

I have found using a series of plastic "U" shaped washers fabricated from plastic containers (typical of what is used for windshield washer fluid, oil etc.)
Simply cut shape and size required to be placed under the head of the bolt or between panels to protect the surface from damage and will allow movement for adjusting to proper fitment.

That's thinking. I do something simaliar when mounting motorcycle tires to protect the rims.
