Hello all! I'm new here and am currently looking to purchase a '68 Newport. It is a 2 door coupe and is super clean with no rust and 83K original miles. With what little bit of comparables I could find, it seems that the asking price of $9500 is not completely out of line. Obviously I'm gonna try to get it a bit cheaper than that, but is that a decent price? Also, really the only flaw I could find with it, is 2 cracks in the dash pad. Where could I source one in the teal color, and does the dash have to come out for install? Thanks in advance!

The price might be OK for a #2 car. The cracked dash pad might be a warning sign. You really haven't provided enough info to provide meaningful advice. Some pics would help too.

If you can get and post a good selection of pictures it might help. 9500 For a 83000 mile Newport is on the high side unless it is a super nice car.. Like Fratzog said if the car is a #2 (a really nice original that pretty much needs nothing, or a very well done restoration) or better it could be worth near that. Normally you could expect to pay 4000-5500 for a clean driver that needs very little (or a #3 car). Make sure there isn't any existing, or covered up rust. Common areas on a 68 are, trunk floor, lower rear quarters (inner and outer), floor pans, rear wheel wells, lower C pillar and rear window, front cowl and lower front fenders in front of the doors.

Thanks for the info! I know I didn't give much to go on. Here is a copy of the listing on EBay. It does look super clean, but it has had a paint job. It says there is no rust, but obviously that will have to be confirmed. Personally I just love the color combo and the interior! I am looking for a nice cruiser that I can just drive. I already have a few show cars, and I just want something now that I don't have to do much to, and that I won't be afraid to drive on long trips or in bad weather.

"No rust" is hard to believe. You really need to get under the car and look for rusted thru floors (very typical on passenger's side), rusted inner fenders behind the rear wheels and rust in the front bottom corners of the doors. $9500 seems like a premium price, so the car must be almost perfect to command that. Very few are. A high-end engine, factory air, and disk brakes would help.

Welcome aboard!

Solid advice so far. I wouldn't pull the trigger too fast on that car.

I'm almost thinking we saw the car recently here. Was it advertised on the Internet?

no car you see locally driven is any better than a 3 or average retal

Thanks for all the input, guys! 1978 NYB, that is the one. I posted a link to it as well. I figured that those hubcaps were wrong, and the interior looked pretty fresh for a 40+ year old car. I'm not really worried about the originality of it, as long as things were done right. I will be changing the wheels and maybe adding a few things anyway.
Also, I wasn't necessarily going to pull the trigger at that price, just trying to get a feel for the value before I started bidding on it. I've talked to the seller, and she has answered all my questions thus far. She doesn't seem shady at all, but you just never know. It's especially risky buying something online, where you can't visually inspect beforehand.
I do really like the car. I have been looking for a big 'ol cruiser for some time, and this one seems really nice, IF it can be gotten for the right price. Thanks to you guys, that part is a lot easier to judge now. Thanks again!

The best advice I can give you is to drive or fly and put your own eyeballs on the car before you buy it. You'll be glad you did in the long run. I think that car, with no other surprises, is worth half the BIN price.

Good advice, for sure! Unfortunately, that isn't possible right now. I did request some photos of some of the common rust spots you guys mentioned, and some more answers on a few other things (like the under-dash wiring). :icon_eek: Hopefully she will be forthright in getting that info to me soon. I've gotten a good feeling from her so far, but not really sure how knowledgeable she is. I'm thinking I might be safe bidding in the $5K max range. I do have the option of not completing the deal if upon inspection it is materially different than the description in the ad, where it clearly states, "no bondo, no rust". Although I have thus far had good luck with purchasing vehicles on the net (twice), it is still a huge leap of faith that I definitely don't take lightly.

Good luck and let us know what the outcome is on this car.

You mean, like let you know when I'm about to hang myself with the rat's nest of a wiring harness under the dash?:head_smack: LOL!
BTW, I just got some emails with a round of answers and she says she will take the pics I requested tomorrow and send them over. She gave me the name and # of the mechanic that did the work on the car, gonna give him a call tomorrow. I'm starting to get a better and better feeling about this whole deal. I will definitely keep you all posted on how it turns out.
Thanks again!

Well, the auction just ended and I am the proud owner of this land yacht! I wound up paying $6500, which was the reserve price. A little steep, but not crazy I don't think. Especially if it turns out as nice as the pics she sent me seem to indicate. We're going to pick it up tomorrow morning, and then drive it home. Nothing like a 500 mile road test, huh? LOL! There are a few little items with the car I need to address, but I'm hoping to get those worked out really soon and just cruise this summer! I'm sure y'all will be hearing a lot more from me about this barge. Thanks for all the help thus far!:icon_thumleft:
