Ooow... I'm going to like this thread...

Now I gotta go find some stuff to post!

Heids hotdogs in Liverpool, NY. This is a Syracuse landmark. I knew a guy that contracted race engine parts and he said the guys from Chrysler always wanted to go there for lunch.

1930s counter. Looks about the same today.

Except for the new cars and the red and white tent, this looked about the same as when that 1930's pic was taken.

For years, the only thing they served was hot dogs... Made in the building behind the restaurant. They never had fries or even ketchup. A request for ketchup might get you tossed out. They've expanded their menu with crap like chicken fingers for the kids... and added ketchup... and Hoffman makes their dogs to Heids recipe. Still good, but lost a little with the modern concessions. Personal favorite is the "coney" which is a hot dog made of pork and veal. It's a little spicy... and the only condiment that should ever be used is their original mustard. They used to have tubs of it at the end of the counter with a wooden paint stick to apply the mustard.

Carrols in Syracuse. This was across from my high school and was the place to go if you were street racing in the 70's. Of course, I wouldn't know about such things....

These were popular in Syracuse, with the owner of the chain living in the area. They were converted to Burger Kings and now they are the largest franchisee of Burger Kings in the world.

The Club Burger was the preferred meal

How about a bar... This place had a wild history. The landlord tried to burn it down in the mid 70's, only problem was the bar owner was still in the building... He got out and the landlord went to prison. It became the G & L lounge and was the place to go for street racing in Syracuse in the 80's. Again, I wouldn't know about such things, but it was rumored that someone that looked like me was there with the late "Nitrous" John Gosson around that time.

It got to be a really rough place and Syracuse shut it down.

i like that they kept the original design of the building and did not remodel and make it more "modern"

My Grandparents store, on the Southside of Pittsburgh, on East Carson st. across from the 29th street gate of Jones and Laughlin steel south side works. Building is still there has a modern front on 1st floor because of a drunk driver in 1977. Steel mill and the buildings on right side of picture are all gone.

A & W restaraunts were and still are, very popular all over the world. I think they only trail Micky D's in number in Canada. Here in BC they were a favorite of the car crowd and attracted all the custom cars and street race guys on a Friday and Saturday night. Car hop service back then, which you can still get at a couple of restaurants close to me (not A & W though) I remember back in the late 60's they tried the girls on roller skate thing, ala American Graffiti, but sprained ankles stopped that! Big mugs of roots beer, whistle dogs, Chubby Chicken, great onion rings, good stuff!

Here is one of the great oddities of the restaurant world, Wagon Ho's! I believe they were first built in the late 60's or early 70's and a few of them popped up in BC. One was on the King George Highway in Whalley at about 100th Avenue. They had visions of being the next McD's but the food was garbage, and they were bankrupt in a couple of years. Apparently they had a 100 or so locations across North America but I only ever saw one. When the King George site was demolished to make way for an office building, a guy I knew bought the statue (the driver) from the demo crew and installed it on the top of a huge stump next to his driveway to greet his incoming guests. It was still there about a decade ago, not sure about now.

Another landmark diner in the Whalley area, the Round Up Cafe. Operated by the Springenatic family from 1959 up to a year or so ago. The family was and still is heavily involved in Whalley Minor baseball, where the main diamond is named Orest Springenatic Field. His son Denis, still coaches there and ran the cafe for many years. Gorgeous neon sign of a bucking bronco and still has the 50's interior. Spent many a night whoopin' it up in the many bars and clubs in the area, and going to the Round Up for late night grub. One of the best places in the province for remedying a hangover. Ham, Bacon, eggs, hasbrowns, toast and 1/2 dozen perogies with sour cream. You could sop up a lot of stale beer with this one!
