A good history of the small block, much like has been told here, can be found in the book How To Rebuild The Small Block Mopar, by William Burt. At about the 4:50 time, guy on the right thought the 318 was introduced in 1969. 318 was introduced in 1967 and the 273 was indeed made up until 1969 according to the history found in this book.
If you want to know more on the small blocks, two other books also cover these, Mopar Small Block Engines: How To Build Max Performance by Larry Shepard and How To Build Big-Inch Mopar Small Blocks by Jim Szilagyi. There is also The Mopar Six-Pack Engine by Larry Shepard which includes the 340 Six-Pack and applying this to other small blocks.
Another source many forget are magazines of the past which did build articles on these engines. Ebay is a great source to find them.
