I have a '70 new yorker and I need to replace a wire that unfortunately is part of one of the factory welded splices under the dash and I was just curious if I am better of just replacing the whole splice or if I could in theory solder a new wire onto the existing splice or how should I go about replacing this wire.

Two options-
Use an "open barrel splice" to attach the new wire to a convenient place in the harness. Crimp and solder.

You could also a "split bolt". These are available in different sizes at your local hardware store.
