Guys, not sure if the question fits here.
Does a 1971 Chrysler 300 steering wheel fit in a 1969 Chrysler 300?
I heard something about different shaft sizes.

Got a new ride? :steering:
If I recall correctly, 69 is one year only.
But maybe that's just for tilt column steering wheels.

Due to the locking steering column introduced in 1970, the steering columns changed from 1969 to 1970. I think that would make them different wheels.

The difference might be tilt vs non tilt.
As far as I know all non tilt columns use the same shaft/spline size.

It is the outside diamater of the column got larger for key on column, and the wheel changes for that. Talking non tilt here.

IDK anything about a tilt.

This picture will display the difference between a '69 column and one from a '70.

Are 69 wheels different than a 71, yes.
How different?
Can you mount a 71 wheel on a 69?

Apparently the 71 is larger in diameter in the column housing.
Will the 71 wheel fit on the 69 splines? Unknown, yet to be answered here.
Even if the 71 wheel fits the 69 splines, will it look funny not lining up?

Thank you for your input Alan. Then my best choice is probably to go for a 69 steering wheel someone has in the US, which does need alot of TLC. Then wait for a 71 wheel, someone here in the Netherlands, might have stored somewhere.

I was going to put a wood grain wheel in my 69 Fury convertible. From what I read on multiple boards and from the parts selling sites the 69 is smaller at the base do to a smaller steering column. The bigger base 70 wheel will bolt to the smaller 69 column better than the smaller base 69 wheel will bolt onto to the bigger 70 column. In a nutshell they all say move down in years not up because the smaller base wheel will look funny on the big base column. I don’t think there’s much difference between a 70 and 71 wheel except for the styling.

PS I did a thread where I swapped the wheel and there’s pics of the 69 column with no wheel on it.

Good luck w the wheel - Ed

Great info Ed, thanks.
I´ll go for the 69 steeringwheel to avoid problems, and have the original look.
Do you have a link from the thread?

Sorry not sure how to save links on here. Just search “steering wheel helping hand” (part 3 I believe) and my screen name the goose and there’s pics of the wheel and the job.

Perhaps a photo essay will help on the differences. All non-tilt column shafts have the same spline size, 1969 to 1973, so no problem fitting there. As for the steering wheel base, ‘69 - ‘70 are close, ’69 is smaller by 1/2 an inch

Here is the 1970 mated with the 69 column, as you can see it is wider than the column.

The horn ring would hide the differences for the most part.

Here is the wheel from a ‘73, very similar to the ‘71. Note that the horn mechanism is quite different than the ‘69-70, it will look odd, but functionally would mount without a problem.
