Coming out of the Detroit Autorama yesterday I spotted this.

neat car.

ASIDE:

Corner of Washington Blvd at Larned, downtown Detroit, near the former Cobo Hall (now called Huntington Place). North straight ahead, looking northeasterly. Second pic is 180 degrees looking south toward Canada.

Brownstone/limestone trimmed bulding (background middle, built 1929, was once Detroit Firestation Headquarters) is where they (Hollywood) shot scenes from the movie "Real Steel".

Wow. Cobo is now called Huntington place? When did that happen? I had heard the January auto show was being held at "Huntington Place" I thought ok, so they're not holding it at Cobo any more, but I guess I was wrong.

Its still there, but it aint quite "our Dad's (and ours) Cobo anymore.

Past 5-6 years, Cobo has had three difference names. "Huntington Place" since 2021

"Huntington Place (formerly known as Cobo Hall, Cobo Center, and briefly TCF Center) is a convention center in Downtown Detroit, owned by the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) and operated by ASM Global. Located at 1 Washington Boulevard, the facility was originally named after former Mayor of Detroit Albert Cobo.

The largest annual event held at Huntington Place is the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which has been held at the center since 1965."

My dad designed some of the electrical and lighting systems at Cobo hall (the round building). He worked in downtown Detroit during the 60's at Giffels Associates, they moved to Southfield after the riots.

yeah man ... the Arena (the round bulilding) obviously still there, but NOT an "arena" anymore. It is Big, honkin' conference room with views of the river. better use of the real estate, given joe Louis has come/gone, and Red Wings moved to new joint next to the Fox (Illitch lettuce at work).

. Thanks for the info on the naming convention update. Good memories of going to Cobo Hall yearly for the auto show. One thing I will always remember is navigating our very large 1970's Mopar vehicles into the parking structure, it was a very steep, tight corkscrew ramp that seemed to go up forever. Painted white walls that reflected the headlights and the occasional markings left on the walls someone who drifted just a bit too much.

yep. you've been there. I have the privilege of hitting that wall .. once. Maybe twice.

that ramp is long gone, but my uncle made me tackle it as a new driver nearly 50 years ago. I did leave some bumper chrome on the wall. shoot .. his car ('73 Olds 98). shouldnt have made me do it.:poke:

that thing was a b**** even for experienced drivers.
