Don't put more gear in the car. Everyone knows that's how you get a 2-bbl 273 into the 13s with 6.38 gears but makes the car a POS for everything else. He is doing it right, big motor with lots of grunt.

A matter of opinion and what the individual wants to do with their car. Perhaps you have never had a ride in a C Body with a stroked big block and a stronger gear than a 3.23.

My yellow '68 Sport Fury with a stock appearing professionally built 520" wedge and 3.73 rear gear is a blast to drive on the street and is fun at the track. Long distance highway cruising is not its strong suit but I've driven her an hour or so running 3,000 rpm at highway speeds, which is tolerable noise wise and otherwise rather comfortable.

Anything beyond a 4.11 rear gear does not make any sense for the street but 3.55 or 3.73 is a nice compromise IMHO.

IMHO you are choking that engine with that single snorkel air cleaner.
It is the stock snorkel top but a 14" k&n filter and base. It leaves a 2" opening all around the underside of the air cleaner.

Actually, I would love to put LESS gear in it. I drive it 80+ miles to the track one way and I wish I could run the stock 2:76 gears. The problem is that the 2:76 gears have a coarse spline pinion and no one makes a coarse spline yoke that fits a beefed up driveshaft with 1350 sized u-joints like i installed.

That helps (small diameter bottom) but you are drawing in hot air from the bottom. You will pick up a little switching to a dual snorkel or an open element air cleaner.

Sound like you need a truck and trailer for the days you head to the drag strip.

I get a real sense of pleasure driving it to the track, bolting on the drag radials in the parking lot, making a few runs, changing tires and driving 80 miles back home. A trailer would be easier, but I daily drive my car year round and it think it defeats the point of a true "street car"

That's a matter of compromise. A newer Charger SRT8 will run in the 12s and it will drive 75mph all day, that is a standard to build a old car to not a "I can live with 3000rpm /65 mph car". I have nothing against a drag car, I own one but it's road time will be very limited, just enough to test and have a little fun. If I wanted a dual purpose car I'd gladly give up the 1/2 second and not put up with a speed hampered car.

I'm with Dave exactly.
Probably a good compromise to a gear change would be dropping the tire diameter down from the 28" tires to some 275/50 DRs for racing.
According to this calculator, it would be like swapping to 4.21 gears.
In my case, there is a noticeable difference out of the gate.

Thats a genius idea, i dont know if the 50 series will fit under the fenders, I will take some measurements.

According to your calculator, I get a new ratio of 3.48 a 275/60 is ~28" tall the 275/50 is ~26" tall

Yea I started with a 3.91 gear, sorry.
FWIW on my Nitto 555s, the 50 and 60 are exact same width.
Hopefully they will work for you, its a step in the right direction.

540 in a "B" body > 3.23 break gears> 3.91 broke / bent housing. Satellite is now CTD /727 dana 3.73
for best times.
Did the same for my Dart swinger
540 / 518 trans, best gear ratio worked out to 3.73 for the street / cruise.

CTD as in a big smoky straight 6?

That Is impressive to say the least!! What kind of improvements do you plan on making to drop 3 1/2 tenths? And gaining 2-3 mph? 40 hp would do it or going to a mineshaft track! Of course a tiny 75 shot wouldn't hurt either!

I am going to take the spare tire and jack out of the trunk next time.
