We trust none of our fellow members were directly affected by this incident.

Probably not until that's said by police, these days any fruitloop may do such a thing.

Even if it's a person claiming be a Muslim, that doesn't mean it has anything to do with that faith as there are many crazies out there believing they'll be a martyr because some person has radicalized them.

Sad but true.

I agree that the simple faith association doesn't define them as terrorist, just kind of a lump sum association with these type of events since so many have been "done in the name of allah".

...these days any fruitloop may do such a thing.

And that's a damn sad truth.

1st my sympathies to all the families who lost loved ones. This man committed murder because he was too cowardly to commit suicide. Despicable! 2nd: do not know the person's religious affiliation.

A general comment on Islam: The problem with Islam is the violence in their word of God, the Qur'an. The entire religion is responsible for distributing this book as the word of Allah and providing violent commands by which to radicalize fundamentalist believers - fundamentalists: people who will take any action, as long as that action is a command in a so-called "word of God."

The main 2 English translations of the Qur'an are the Noble version and the Abdel Haleem version. I challenge anyone to read either version. I read the Haleem. Word of God: I found 21 occasions that claimed Allah sent down/gave the word. Intolerance: I found 131 condemnations of non-believers to hell. Power: I found 50 commands of unquestioning obedience to the leader. Violence. I found 45 places where God sets examples of violence by destroying people. In addition, I found 35 commands for fighting/violence against others.

At some point, we need to hold this religion accountable for claiming to be a religion of peace, but putting out "words of God" that inspire violence against other humans who do not conform to the will of the religious leader. Such hypocrisy takes life among moderate muslims and non-muslims.

I'm not going to get bogged down in a religious discussion but one can find many acts of violence and similar commandments in other religious documents besides the Qur'an.

This is not new. Many acts of violence have been committed in the name of faith since the dawn of man.

Firstly, my condolences & Christian prayers go out to the victims and families:(

This all inclusive PC way of thinking needs to stop for us or Canada will become another country where anyone can justify their actions when they randomly kill innocent people in the name of their religious beliefs or I've had a bad life so "I'm taking out as many as possible with me and hope the police kill me so I don't face the punishment for my senseless random act of violence".
But even these days here in Canada, if we speak out against the immigration polices or attempt to protect our rights as natural born Canadian citizens of many generations we may be arrested and charged with a hate crime or possibly worse yet taken to court by a private immigrant Canadian & charged with some type of discrimination suit and sued for all of our worldly belongings...The courts will find in their favour!
This was close to a reality for myself almost 15 years ago when a co-worker decided after I had made a comment in humorous jest that he was going to sue me for a stereotypical comment made to which he had agreed & laughed very heartily at the time. Fortunately the company I work for still stood behind me and sent this person packing down the street.
After this event I have always done my best to be careful of any comment regardless of how well I know the person I may be clowning around with or how I truly feel about the actions of certain ethnic races.
i do truly believe as well that there are many immigrants that are truly thankful for having the opportunity to live in a peaceful country of Canada.
It's the few bad apples that are spoiling the barrel...
Agree or disagree, it's an issue that will not ever go away now that Pandora's box has been opened here in Canada...

I hope & pray for the safety of all citizens all around the world, not just Canada.

Just think how much better the world could be if we all just showed love to each other instead of hate...
 
My condolences to all the families touched by this fruitcake. It's beyond my ability to understand how the fruitcakes are formed and why nobody notices until they go out of control.

The comments about religion and the things you can dig out of books like the Qur'an or the Christian bible are, I believe, the root of the problem. It's easy to avoid all responsibility and blame the book, or worse to read between the lines to justify whatever you want to do.

The Christian prayer "The Lord is my Shepherd" says it all. It assumes we are poor dumb sheep wandering lost and unprotected and that to survive we need a shepherd to provide strict supervision with his rod and staff.

In our life time we have witnessed the birth of a new religion, Scientology as devised in 1952 by the fruitcake Sci-Fi author, L. Ron Hubbard. According to some sources there are around 25,000 followers. Maybe the new one will be Mein Kampf.

News flash, I'm not a sheep and I don't need to follow the written word of some fruitcake.

2nd, I understand your feeling of resignation to religious killing as inevitable. However, at some point we will get rid of the idea that human life should be sacrificed for religion and replace it with the idea that religion should be sacrificed to protect human life. Religion is replaceable; human life is not.

I'm tired of hearing someone overcome his conscience with shouts of "Allahu akbar!" and then seeing the deaths of the innocent. Religion is regressive and conformist. Somehow we will replace it with progressive thinking and a truly peaceful picture of God that actually matches God's character. In so doing, we will release complete nonconformity, such that there are 7 billion religions on earth, one for every person on earth.

2nd. What in the history of mankind would lead us to believe this is possible? What makes us any more enlightened or wise than the population of the 1800s, 1500s, 1100s? The modern religions have spanned 1,000s of years for a reason. Humans want and need them. No matter how hard any of them have tried through the centuries, have not been eradicated yet and it’s doubtful they ever will be.

Man is a tribal being by nature. A belief, or a lack of belief, simply puts you in another tribe.
 
Optimism is hard to come by these days.

At least in the founding of this country, Thomas Jefferson penned this phrase of progressive thinking: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

The US then overcame incredible odds to found the first democracy, one which protects life from religion's power to take life. I have always hoped that the slow spread of democracy and education will bring about the continued decrease in power of religion, until one day, we can finally get rid of it.
