Hi, I was checking out my VIN to see what it would tell me, but it doesn't make sense, from the sight I used, D8E5917xxxx tells me the 8 means it's either a Taxi or a Barracuda?

First off, your VIN is a scramble of numbers and letters in the incorrect order! Your 1968-1980 VIN should read:

First character - Car line
Second character - Price line
Third & fourth characters - Body style
Fifth character - Engine Displacement
Sixth character - Model Year
Seventh character - Build Plant
eighth-thirteenth characters - Sequential Build Number (100001 - up)

Example - DP23H76100036

What car are you trying to decipher the VIN on. Please go and recheck your numbers. That does not correlate to a 1965-earlier VIN sequence, either. A 1965 and earlier look like this:

Example - 425224900

First two characters are make and model. Depending on the years 1962 - 1965, the first character could be a number OR a letter. My example shows a Coronet six-cylinder as the first, and Coronet as the second character. The 5 is 1965. The 2 is Hamtramck, MI. The rest is the sequential number.

First character - Car line
Second character - Model
Third character - Model Year
Fourth Character - Build Plant
Fifth - Eleventh characters - Sequential Build Number

So, in 1965, your D8 would be a Polara V8 Taxi. Is that what you have?

I'll clue you in on something - MOST of those "VIN decoding web sites" SUCK and are terribly inaccurate. MOST...

1. I'm not sure but that doesn't look like a proper VIN (65?) Typo?

2. Could it be a Taxi?

Are you missing the first four digits? If so, D for 273,8 is year, E is build location. Then six digits consisting of numbers,
IE: BH23D8Exxxxxx. BE23 would be Barracuda Hardtop, etc.

He's providing an eleven-digit number, so assuming that is correct, it's for a 1965-earlier VIN. It still does not conform at all to either format.

But, true, he may have simply omitted the first four, for a '66 - '80 VIN.

OK, so that helps! The "D" is Polara/Monaco/880 V8. The "8" is Convertible. The rest I am doing an educated guess on, so do not take it as gospel...The "E" is a Canada code for 383. The "5" is 1965. The "9" is Windsor, ON. The last six are the sequential build number.

Hope this helps! Perhaps a Canadian forum member can confirm or rebuke what I have mentioned?

Sorry, I guess it would of made sense to provide as much info as possible, anyway I didn't leave out any numbers & it is a 318 motor. Is there any way to tell the production numbers?
