The MEL 390/430 engines are smooth as glass. You also need to watch potential oiling problems and distributor issues. The are like big block Mopars with the dist shaft driven off the oil pump, but have bushing problems that can seize the distributor. If the power steering needs work, RUN away! There is an episode of Fantom Works where they are restoring a '60. The PS parts were nearly unobtainable. Worth a watch if you search MotorTrend TV for it

390 is not related to the 430. It's an FE. The FE came in 332, 352, 360, 390, 410, 427 and 428. The 430 is an MEL. IIRC the MEL came as a 383, 430 and 462. There might have been a 361 also but I'm not sure.

Yeah, I knew that. Yes, there was a 361 and a 383 used in Edsels. I had the 430 in my '62 Lincoln convertible - most beautiful non-Mopar I've ever owned!
