I dunno Will. I generally love Virgil Exner's designs, but this one is a curiousity to me. Was he trying to emulate the 1959 and 1960 Chevrolet fins in the rear, though much muted? This one is an acquired taste for me, although very interesting.

I am doubting the seat covers are original, as they were much nicer in the production cars - much more stylish. They really detract the most from the overall value of the car. I would have redone them correctly, to make this car really shine.

Much nicer than most examples I have seen though. I have no idea of the value either. But I am guessing it won't go that high, so maybe you will be tempted! But it is really rare.

Well he used the 58 Impala fins on the front.

An acquired taste in deed. It was the last Virgil Exner design before leaving Chrysler, although some of his work carried over in the 1962 models. Your right about the interior being incorrect. But it looks like only the seats would need to be redone to be correct. Probably about a $1500.00 job.

I'm just curious...... As I already have one of these. Mine is better equipped and has lower mileage, but still needs to be restored, (In process). Nice examples are few and far in between, and prices are all over the board. I wanted to buy one in 1965 but dad said "NO.... Its a convertible, if it rolls over you'll die".... That was that and it took me 47 years to find another worthy one.

As hard as it is to find parts for these cars, this is the best way to buy one. Head light trim rings... $225.00 each when you find them, NOS tail lights.... $1000.00 for a set. My aero, (Deluxe) steering set me back $1450.00 to restore. Nice ones like this tent to go high.

A similar car ( I think with cross ram induction ) sold in NZ earlier this year around the $60K NZD mark.
Cliff Voss was mostly responsible for the design of the '61 Plymouth. Using a rear end design on the front of the car as stated above.
Ex had been working with a team in secrecy at another plant developing the Valiants' ( which were 'Falcons' until ford approached Chrysler to use the name ) which later became Plymouths' in the local market. They told the rest of Chrysler that they were working on a military project.
Exner was not impressed with the '61 although he was partially responsible for the design.

Your point on buying a car this way is so true. I couldn't agree more. I tried to make the same point regarding buying the latest Chrysler 300F that was highlighted here this week. One is way better off buying a pretty good one for decent money than buying a real basket case that needs everything redone and little is useable as is. You will be money and time ahead. Guys with deep pockets may do otherwise.

I recently read this book and highly recommend it to all...

If there is one, did you get the hard back copy or the paperback? If the latter, was it of good quality with good color photos? Or would it be worth buying the hardback edition if you have one? Just trying to gauge the quality difference, because the price difference for just the paperback is pretty big ranging between $30 - $125.

The 61 Plymouths always had a face only a mother could love. That said, they are still very cool to me. This one looks like a real beauty! I went on their website, but it's not on there, just to get an idea of what they were thinking.

I purchased two paperback copies through our local Trademe site ( our version of Ebay and Craigslist combined ). There was no hard back option so my choice was easier. The books were shipped to my door from the sellers Australian depot. The total cost was $104 NZD. The construction or binding of the books is very good and there is a mixture of black and white and colour throughout the book, along with plenty of Virgils' drawings and concepts. 176 pages long. I think the Virgil Exner story would make a great movie if done right.

But it was much easier for her to love this face than the Dodge.
I respectfully disagree, the 61 Dodges were way better looking, in my opinion.
But, in the grand scheme of things, at least you could tell them apart! Not like NOW!

Which website are you referring to? If the allamericanclassic one, I did see it there. But it was a link only to the Ebay listing.
I am sure Will knows this valuation website well, but here is what this one that I use suggests for valuation (and their condition guide is pretty demanding):

Wonder if I should get the kindle version?

When I see a part on ebay I could use for my '61. I put on my watch list. I even have a few spare parts it never hurts to stock up on spare parts. I have a spare push button shift , spare tail light lenses. spare back up lenses, spare heater control, spare fender mirrors a am radio for my car that works but that will be sent in to have fm added and jacks installed so I can listen to an ipod the 1 in my car does not work. I thought about installing a Pioneer CD player but decided to have the original radio converted in stead. I am looking for a day/night rear view mirror ( correct 1) I have 1 but it does not work it will not go from day- night when you press the buttons. Its in my car now but not installed. My '61 is currently having a face lift done mine has ps, pb and added on AC . When I got the history on mine the PS came with the car when it rolled off the assembly line but the power brakes were added later my booster leaks but I will put a booster on from a later chrysler car and save up some money have my original booster repaired. As you can see my '61 smiled for the camera :)
