1970 DODGE POLARA CUSTOM 4 DOOR SEDAN

(Looks like CHP undercover car-and has original 383)
Really nice 1970 Polara Custom with nearly flawless original interior, nice original color repaint and factory AC. 63,000 miles. Not even a door chip!
Looks fantastic and drives very well, but stiffer than standard because it has heavy duty suspension-and a GIANT front control bar.

No. The fellow before me took a very well preserved 4 door sedan with its original 383-2bbl and installed many upgrades with the intention of making it a replica undercover car. Unfortunately, he passed away before the project was completed. However, there is upgraded heavy duty suspension front and rear (with the biggest front anti-sway bar I've ever seen), a new aluminum radiator, an upgraded alternator, real HD wheels with "poverty caps,"electronic ignition, 4 bbl manifold with Edelbrock 4 bbl carburetor, MOPAR engine dress-up kit and a custom oversize dual exhaust with crossover. I thought I might enjoy driving it, but prefer my 66 Imperial more, and garage space is limited- so this car must go.
 
That would be my guess, although there are no stains on the carpet and no anti-freeze odor in the car. Another possibility is that because this is San Diego and air conditioning is more important than heat, the hot water valve may have been bypassed to assure maximum cooing-something I myself have done in other cars I have owned. Just a guess.
 
It would be great if you could post a photo of the fender tag.
 
Thanks. A35 towing package would explain the extra leaf in the rear springs. There's no indication that a tow hitch was ever mounted on it.

I too am very curious what the A74 is code for. I do not have that code in my code book.
I do not know. The Dodge Division code guide for 1970 full-size Dodges says nothing about A74 (even though one page of the guide lists says A75 is Monaco 500, A76 is Monaco Brougham). The only thing I know is that I have not seen this code on any 1970 Polara 'vert tag, and I have seen almost a hundred of those.

That lack of knowledge is why I posted the link in my previous post, referring to another thread in which that option code was discussed. The following members are among the most likely to shed some light on the A74 code for a 1970 Polara (there will be others, but any of those members lives/breathes fuselage Polaras): @69CoronetRT @fc7_plumcrazy @Bill Watson @kmccabe56 @polara71 @71Polara383 @Fratzog

This is a shot in the dark but I found a couple references to A74 as a Protection Package, is your car undercoated? My car does have factory undercoating and does NOT have A74 but it seems to me that often not all options are stamped on the fender tag. If you find a build sheet, that may tell more.

Nice try but I don’t think so. The code for undercoating was J55 (it came as a package with the under hood pad). AFAIK , the J codes were not stamped into the tag.

Edit: AFAIK the protection package, which included undercoating, was code A05 for 1969-1971 (credit goes to @LeBaron1973 for linking in 2015 to the Mopar1 list of code).

The only a47 that would make sense is an SE version for 70. So challenger or charger.
I've seen several mis stamps from the Hamtramck plant on Ebodies.

I like the idea of a mis-stamping, and I suspect that @69CoronetRT also will. Rather than A47, however, I submit A24 as a more likely candidate. The A24 package was coded into the fender tag of several 1970 convertibles, and it included a carpet trunk cover and a spare wheel cover.

@watchfatha -- what does the trunk look like in your car? @polara71 and @saforwardlook have reported numerous times (example) that cars with the A24 "trunk dress-up package" package rarely have any rust at all.

The PPA information is (AFAICT) not applicable to your car. As noted by @fc7_plumcrazy there are too many US-market 1970 Polaras tagged A74 for PPA to be the correct interpretation. T


PS: several other package codes provided on those public code lists are not relevant to our cars (specifically, for 1970-1971 senior Dodges). One example is the A07 package on 1971 Dodge Polara and Monaco vehicles--see this thread.
