I've been working on the Newport for the last few weeks trying to rid it of some cancer. Since no one reproduces panels for these cars I had to get a little inventive. This car will never be a show quality car. I just want it as a nice driver. I've had her for 4 years. Now it's time to make some repairs. I'll keep posting more picture as progress is made.

nice work. that's quite a metal brake. any details?

Time to renew this old thread. I've done more work on the 75 recently. It's definitely too long but here some more pics for you guys. Fixed the outer wheel well on the driver's side. Here's the first piece I made. I have more pics on the next piece I made. Now to do the inner wheel well!

I'm sorry not all of these are in order, but you get the picture. I used a piece of 16 guage steel that was bent with a 1" leg and used some good old fashioned tools to create the wheel well lip. I cut the bent up piece and formed it to the shape I needed. I then wleded everything up and grinded the outside smooth. I also used a hammer and anvil to straighten the pieces as needed. Welding them in a short period of time warps it some. Then it was just a matter of cutting the rust out and welding the new piece in. Taking my time welding it so the panel doesn't warp too bad. I think it came out ok. When I get to doing the inner wheel well Ill try to document it as well. Still have to fix the rocker on the driver's side. And the front fender on the passenger side needs help. Thanks for looking!

Damn - wish I could do that!!
:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
I'm sure you could, but the patience to make it happen would be phenomenal...

I'm liking it... :thumbsup::thankyou:

You've just inspired me to want to make those tough to reproduce bends out of welding wire, with a little sheet metal to act as filler :poke:

My goodness the patience and effort to not end up with a wrapped and twisted mess... Kudos to you sir!:)

I like the pie cut solution, I take it that you don't have a shrinker/stretcher

That's a negative.
Here's some more progress on the Newport. The rear wheel well is almost complete. I started making a piece for the rocker panel.

I shouldve left a little extra here. I'll just have to weld on some extra before I got to weld this whole piece in.

The fitup is pretty good this far. Making the next bends took some time and creativity.

After a little more trimming and some fitment upon tacking this piece in it should come out ok. More to come!

Got the rocker panel patch just about welded in. Have to do the bottom lip yet. I left about 1/8th in hanging over so I could weld the bottom in completely. And i used the grinder and reamed out the gaps so i could get as much penetration as possible. It was getting late so I just sprayed some primer over it for the night. It should look ok after grinding the welds down. I'm also putting that piece of trim back along the bottom as well so... More to come!

Up next come this rusty *** front fender. Since I can't find anyone who will sell me a good one I'll just be fixing this lol. After I fix this there really isn't much other rust to fix on the car. A few spots here and there. Then I will be getting everything from the body line down sandblasted and start prepping for paint. I'm going to be painting everything from the chrome trim down the side, down. It's gonna happen in the next month or so.

Man you sure love that car.. that’s cool. Keep the progress coming.

Yeah haha it was my first car and it's gonna be with me for a while so I'm planning on making it my daily driver. Eventually a 451 stroker built 727 with gear vendors overdrive. Modern A/C system... Just a matter of $. Fixing the body right now isn't really costing me much but my time.
