Hi Everyone,

My first C-Body post! I am working on a Fury for a customer. He has
told me that it is a 1972 1/2 Fury Gran Coupe (it was brought in from
another shop completely disassembled and butchered). He told me
that the quarters are different then the early 72 models. Does anyone
know if this is true, and if so what the difference is? Right now the quarters
are completely hacked apart and I have nothing to go by. Any help would
be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Jim

I am not a Plymouth expert. I think 72 and 73 should have similar quarters if not the same. There is no reproduction parts available, you need to find NOS quarters or a clean donor car.

I just picked up a NOS quarter for my 71 Polara. Drove 11 hours to pick it up and spent about a grand on it.

Thanks, I did find one NOS one for a 72 Fury, but am afraid to spend the money if I'm
not sure it is the right one. This is our first C-body, we usually stick to B & E bodies....

Someone here once pointed out the differences of the " bulge" around the rear wheels on 2 doors when compared to four doors. Not aware of the mid year change but like Wyatt I am a Dodge boy.

There is a difference between the hardtop and formal version as I can recall. There should be a thread on the differences in here somewhere. Basically the hardtop coupe and has the buldge all the way around the rear wheel opening. The Formal is on the front side only

There were differences in the quarters in 72...had nothing to do with early/late or mid year production:

Thank You Mr C!! The pics are a great help. I did forget to mention it is a 2 door, so if I am looking at the pics correctly, I need the quarters shown in the upper right car of the first picture?

If the third and forth digits of the VIN are 23, you need the quarters in the upper left picture. If the digits are 29, you need the quarters in the lower left pic.

Quarter panels from a 1973 Fury will fit a '72 with minor mods, but they did not offer the Formal Coupe in 1973, so if you have a 29 in the VIN, you are looking 1972 only.

Hmmm, VIN starts with PP29K2F.

If I read the literature below the pic's correctly, both styles were available
in the the Gran Coupe? The plot thickens lol....

Thanks again everyone!!
Jim

You have that reversed....72 and 73 are the same, door skins and all..

PP29 suggests you are looking for the formal coupe body style which is the lower left pic in the first photo of Post #6. Now, just to make things more interesting, is it only the sheet metal forward of the rear wheel arches that you need to replace? If so, i think either 2 door body will work as I think the main differences in the coupe quarters is what shows after the wheel arches.

Both body styles were available for Fury II, III, and Gran Coupe. You have a formal coupe, which cuts used parts availability by 75%. As far as NOS goes, you're looking for part numbers 3446298 and 3446299.

True, unless you are thinking of the 1972 two-door Formal hardtop, which was no longer available in 1973. In 1973 all the two-door hardtops had the bulge(s) front and aft of the rear wheel.

Having said that, it might perhaps be a way to take the door skin of the rear door of a 1972 or 1973 sedan or four-door hardtop and weld it in place of the area that has been cut out of the sheetmetal of the 1972 Formal hardtop in question.

One other point of difference - the rear window.

The formal hardtop (29) - only the sculpturing ahead of the rear wheel opening - used the same rear window as the 4 door hardtop with all four corners in rear window glass rounded.

The normal hardtop (23) - sculpturing before and after the rear wheel opening - used the same rear window as the Dodge and Chrysler 2 door hardtops (23) with rounded lower corners and square upper corners.

Here is just a little more support to confirm some of the information above posted!
Mine is a 72 PP23 and here is a picture of it from when I bought it, sorry I don't have a better picture of it at this moment.

By the way I think I have a couple of good fenders, front fenders extensions, radiator core support, hide away headlights doors and possibly center grills too, some trim for fenders as well.
All this came out of a 1972 fury station wagon. Soon I will be posting all these parts for sale.
