The 87 5th AVE 318 was running hot (very hot) after driving for a while in any outside temperature this summer. The problem came on over about 200 miles. All indications pointed to a clogged original radiator.
One option was a new $130 3 core aluminum radiator. Another option was to have the original radiator serviced for an unknow amount of $$$.
So, I stuck the aluminum radiator in the car. Ebay shipping was 4 days. It is a perfect fit. The car runs at the 180-degree thermostat. That's to say it runs at 1/4 on the gauge in 100-degree heat at 700 rpm idle with the a/c on. And the same temp at 75 mph a/c on. That's about what I expected.
While I was in there, I also installed an aluminum parallel flow condenser to replace the original whatever was in there. It's much easier to do on this car with the radiator out of the car. The a/c blows 40 degrees from the dash in 100 outside heat sitting in the sun at 700 rpm idle for long (tested half an hour) periods of time. I think it would do that until all the gas was gone from the tank. That's with 134A in the a/c. Standard 5 blade and fan clutch.
So, there's that option for us.
