Make driving dangerous again

I got a kick out of this little article. Some funny stuff but also some very true nuggets of insight regarding cars and people. I'm definitely on board with more manual transmissions.

Make Driving Dangerous Again - Outside - Pocket
I'm on board too. Hell my left leg haz been more developed then the right one for most of my adult life. I laugh every time I remember the time a friend brought home an '89 T&C 5 speed for the weekend and we and wives had hooked up for the afternoon and he ask me to take the wheel for a spin around the burbz on Detroit's west side. I came out of hiz neighborhood onto Ford Road and when I went from 3rd to 4th crossing over Telegraph Road he noticed my left foot wasn't touching the clutch and went nutz. I think he said like "If you screw this thing up I'm gonna get an *** chewin". He hadn't stopped to think that for all the yearz we'd known each other, he'd know that I grabbed gearz for a living, lol. I got on a side street off Ford road and traded chairs with him. Jer

Make Driving Dangerous Again.

It won't happen.

"All we’ve got to do is rip out all these damn features and creature comforts... The first feature we should remove is the automatic transmission. This would have the immediate effect of taking who knows how many millions of drivers off the road..."

I support it.

My newest car is a 1991, the oldest a 1961, no Change necessary for me.

I'm often saying that we will soon need cars that drive themselves because people are too digitally distracted to pay attention to their driving.

I remember back in the sixties when the Sunday paper was the only way to find a used car. The typical ad would read:

1960 Chevrolet Biscayne. Loaded. Auto, r&h. Call...

:p

I have been saying this for years...."they have been dumbing down the drivers since the 70's with all their safety and creature comforts!"

Cars should only have a few options. They should come standard with manual tranny....but if you want an auto it should cost 25% of the vehicle list price. Disc brakes, power steering and A/C should be the only other options and they should cost a lot to equip as well.

How many accidents have there been because someone was trying figure out how to switch from Sirius to FM3 on the touch screen "Infotainment Center"?

Hate that friggan thing.

Radio I have figured out. The climate control, well that's another story.

NYT, February 2017
"Over the last decade, new cars have gotten electronic stability control systems to prevent skids, rearview cameras to prevent fender benders and more airbags to protect occupants in collisions. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on campaigns to remind the public of the dangers of drunken driving, failing to buckle up and texting while on the go.

Despite all that, more Americans are dying on roads and highways than in years, and the sudden and sharp increase has alarmed safety advocates."

2017 was the second year over 40,000 deaths. What is interesting to me is that there is no number for those seriously injured which has got to top the deaths by a mile. The toll on a family emotionally and economically is huge. Same for society. Wasn't there just 7 people killed in a head on in Georgia? A truck crossed over and hit a van. I wouldn't be surprised if that driver wasn't doing something he shouldn't have been doing. Got him, his wife and a 3 year old daughter killed besides 4 others in the van he hit. The median strip of grass in that road is huge so what the heck was he doing?

I hate these two lane highways with one lane each way and a speed of 55 mph but many tying to go higher combined with semi-tractor trailer rigs. Have to travel one a few times a year and you bet I have my eyes peeled on the other side to watch for any idiots who might cross on a moments notice.

Radio....naa, listen to the music of the big block
Climate control? Open the floor vents and vent windows, 4/60 air... 4 windows down at 60 mph

My 2018 Caterham is a no BS car and a blast to drive! No power steering, no power brakes, no traction control, no stability contro, no radio... Just pure driving fun. You, the car and the road.
I don't need no stinkin' radio just the sound of the engine makes me happy!
Here's one with more power than you'd ever need on the street... Enjoy!

What is your HP rating?

Mine is much calmer. It's a 280s. 280 HP/ton. 1.6 litre Ford Sigma 140 HP. 0-60 in 5 seconds. Car weighs only 1200 lbs.
Quick enough for me.

I think a couple of things have happened. The SUV became the vehicle of choice for many. It used to be the mini van for families, before that the station wagon. Regular cars became smaller with smaller trunks. Ever see how much crap a family with two kids will bring with them to go anywhere? When my kids were babies, there was a diaper bag and a teddy bear or two. Now it's all sorts of electronic gear and the kiddies have to be able to watch whatever obnoxious cartoon they have now. Ever see Yo Gabba Gabba with the dancing personal vibrator? But I digress...

So, then, at least around here, the SUV has to be 4WD because there might be some snow that won't let them travel at 75MPH. The kids are plugged into their electronics in the back while Mom is texting away and putting on make up, it's snowing and they are late for day care. This is one of the many reasons I like being retired and not having to be anywhere in the morning.

Really, things could be much simpler. I drove my daughter in law's Explorer the other day... and hated it.

I have a theory that would cut down on dangerous driving. About the second ticket you get, the judge makes you have a giant spike bolted to the center of your steering wheel. The driver side seat belt gets taken out. That would make you a LOT more careful now, wouldn't it?
