1971 Chrysler Newport Custom 383, rebuilding in Europe

I remember when this car was for sale in Linden NJ a few years ago. It didn't have that rake look though at the time. Glad you saved it . I have been watching your thread.

1970 Chrysler Newport Cater BBD choke question

Hi, Now that the sub freezing temperature is finally here I was able to give my 70 Newport a true old start cold start. Two pumps of the gas pedal, hit the key, and it cranks to life quickly- however I noticed that for the first minute and a half of warm up, the exhaust is very rich (smoky)...

    Carter BBD expertadvice needed

Thanks guys for the advice. I checked for air leaks around the base gasket and intake gasket using carb cleaner and I have detected no leaks. While parked Ive checked the throttle linkage and shaft to see if its sticks but at a glance it doesn't appear to. However, I noticed on my most recent...

    Carter BBD expertadvice needed

Hi guys, I am looking for expert advice from those of you who are familiar with the Carter BBD 2 barrel carburetors found on many of our beloved C bodies. Previously In this thread thread -->> Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle?? I was troubleshooting an at cruising...

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

The orange box Mopar electronic ignition kit was installed about 7 years ago and have about 1000 miles on them. The wires were installed at the same time and are thick Taylor 8 mm wires. Jumping back on the ignition wagon.. I have been recommended earlier in the thread to try advancing the...

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

Ok to summarize, I know my initial timing is at 10°BTDC and my vacuum advance works. Just took the car out for a nice long run with the newly installed Champion spark plugs and a full tank of 93 octane gas with Ethanol stabilizer added. Really runs like a top overall but unfortunetly still has...

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

I believe that definitely was a big part of the problem. I'm noticing much improvement in throttle response and smoothness at cruising. Here is a picture of the car for prosperity.

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

I know the previous owner well and have the maintenance log/notes on what he did to the car. I just swapped out the E3s for Champion RJ12C gapped at .035 and I am already noticing a complete difference! Here is a pic of one of the E3 plugs. The gap is much larger then .035.

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

That will be my next move. The previous owner mentioned he put E3 spark plugs in the car. ( the type that has 2 electrodes and theoretically cant foul). Has anyone had experience with these in a 383 2barrel engine?

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned stepping up my jet size by one larger then factory. I may take that route next.

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

Ok looks like everything checks out. With the vacuum advance unhooked there isn't much movement below 900 RPM. There is around 7° of movement in the 900-1500 range. PS: My electronic ignition kit was installed about 7 years ago /1000 miles ago.

Took a timing light to the car and at idle the timing mark lines up with "10° Before"

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

That is going to be my next move. For starters , what is the initial timing these cars supposed to be set at ?

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

So just an update- capping the vacuum advance line at the carb causes the car to have an off idle bog and a pretty decent part throttle surge that wasnt there before. What do you think of this? @Turboomni

Anyone else have minor hesitation/jerking at part throttle??

The vacuum advance is hooked up to the ported vacuum supply line on the carburetor. I have the 2 barrel Carter BBD.
