1958 Plymouth fires up and then immediately dies!!!

Just an update. Finished hooking up the battery. Cleaned up the terminals and made sure everything was tight. Started the car up and it ran perfectly. No erratic idle nothing. Not sure if there was an issue with the cables but it's now running great. I was going to swap in the old...

1958 Plymouth fires up and then immediately dies!!!

Well, I installed a new ballast resistor. I cranked the car and it fired up...ran smoothly for a little bit and then had a very erratic idle. I checked the battery cable connections and not sure how, but they were all lose so I tightened those up and it ran better but still seems to be a...

1958 Plymouth fires up and then immediately dies!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I've not thought about electronic ignition. The car has always ran well so did not see a need to swap. May consider this for the future. Should have a new ballast resistor here today so hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks again for the suggestions.

1958 Plymouth fires up and then immediately dies!!!

My 1958 Plymouth with a 318 has always started up and ran great. Last weekend it was idling for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden it died. It would crank and fire briefly and then immediately die. I checked the fuel pump and it is pumping fuel. I changed the fuel filter and no change...

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Are you referring to the ridge around the outer edge of the drain plug? The old drain plug had a very crusty and dried gasket of some type that filled in the concave area under the drain plug head. It was where the rusty orange look is on the drain plug.

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Attached are pictures of the old tank drain plug and threads. These were exactly like the replacement tank I got from Big M Auto.

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I checked today (24 hours later) and there are no drips at all. Everything seems sealed. I have another tank that I pulled out to replace with this one. I will take a picture of the threads and bolt so that will help someone else in the future with this issue.

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Got the tank drained and cleaned up the bottom of the tank. The threads looked good and I noticed the drain plug head has a curve inside indicating it had some kind of gasket in the past. I installed a large rubber washer and used Teflon tape on the threads. I reinstalled the drain plug and...

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on draining the fuel today to see how the drain plug/surface looks. Luckily I only put 5 gallons of fuel into the tank.

    Fuel tank drain plug seal

Good morning, I just replaced the fuel tank in my 1958 Plymouth with a nice used one from John at Big M Auto. The tank cleaned up nicely and I replace the filler neck O-ring and the sending unit gasket. I didn't think about the drain plug gasket and now that I have fuel in the car I see it is...

Need a new fuel tank - '58 Plymouth and '59 Dodge

Tried contacting Vans on ebay. I must have spoken to the grump guy because he said the price was the same whether I order one or 100. I guess I will wait for their next sale. Thanks.

Got new gas tank today, how far should the pickup AND float be from the bottom?

Thanks!! So I will reuse my pick ups and just make some new gaskets. Was thinking I would need a new rubber donut gasket for where the filler tube goes into the tank.

Need a new fuel tank - '58 Plymouth and '59 Dodge

Thanks. I did see the ebay listing for Vans and the Vans website. Just heard mixed reviews on them. Anyone have a good experience with them?

Need a new fuel tank - '58 Plymouth and '59 Dodge

It looks like I need new fuel tanks for my 1958 Plymouth and my 1959 Dodge. I had hoped to use the original tanks as both were clean and rust free inside. The problem was that both had been smashed/dented in the past and has small leaks. I did try JB Tank weld and it worked for a few months...

Got new gas tank today, how far should the pickup AND float be from the bottom?

For the original post, how did you like the service from VansAuto? Is it a nice fuel tank? Did you need to buy anything else for the install or did it come with the pickup and gasket? I need to replace the fuel tanks in my 1958 Plymouth and 1959 Dodge Coronet. It looks like they use the same...

    83/4" rear endcswap.

Why is it that everyone wants to go through all the work to swap out the tapered rear axles? If you have the correct puller, working on the rear is actually very easy. I bought one off ebay and it made rear brake work on my '58 Plymouth and '59 Dodge super easy.
