    1965 Newport Identification Help

Hi Torky, thanks for the reply. Yes, it looks like a very feint C1 after the Vin. I hadn't noticed that until you pointed that out. Yes, it's on the title. It's a manual adjust LH mirror. Yes, padded dashboard. I don't know what kind of foam on the seats. No vinyl roof, I wonder if that was...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

It's definitely seen better days. I hope to replace it some day. I have other more pressing issues to fix/replace. I will make a note of if for future reference. Thanks @Sixpactogo !

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I just read through the description on the meter match website and it seems like the way to go. I wonder if I can run it on 12-volts I appreciate the correction. I tend to be a bit pedantic at times (just ask Mrs. Captain Rust Bucket). I grew up in an era of fuel injection and microprocessors...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I agree it seems too good to be aftermarket but it's definitely not the original and it's working on 12 volts for sure, so who knows. I tried adjusting the dash pot to no avail. It will have do for now until I can replace some of these parts. For now, "empty" will be half tank and "full" will be...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I claimed victory too soon. It looks like there is only enough adjustment to set either empty or full. I am not able to adjust the full range. I only get about a quarter of the full range of movement out of the needle while moving the arm of the fuel sending unit from empty to full. @Big_John is...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

Praise God it's working!! I took a short video to show how I wired it up on the bench. I just have to adjust the pot to get more accurate readings and I should be able to slap it back on the car. Ahhh time for a beer! Cheers gents thanks for your help.

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I think you have cracked this case @Big_John !!! That would make sense why I was getting 12 volts to the fuel sending unit wire and 5 volts on the one that I thought was ground. Now I just have to figure out the polarity and test it out. Much thanks to both of you gentlemen! May God bless you...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I was confused by the same thing. I am thinking now that maybe they tried adapting the fuel gauge from an imperial to this Newport I'll have to look at the FSM for the Newport and try to figure out if that could be the case. I don't think the center post is connected to anything else on the...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

I'm using the old fuel sending unit, not mounted on the tank yet. I'd like to bench-test it before I start putting things together. I did measure the resistance and I got 80 at empty and 26 at full. In regards to the ground for the fuel sending unit, am I correct that I should be able to run a...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

Yes, I realize that the original voltage limiter is missing. My instrument cluster does not have a temperature gauge. Just the cold and hot lights. I think you're right about the 5-volt source using the resistor, my question is: how does this affect the interface with the fuel gauge and the fuel...

I'm stumped! Fuel gauge help please

Hello everyone, I am in the process of replacing the fuel tank in my '65 Newport and have discovered that my fuel gauge is not working. Well, at least I can't get it to work, haha. I'm pretty sure it was working to some degree before I started taking things apart. The float in the sending unit...

    Maiden voyage!

Yeah, I can imagine that being severely underpowered haha.

    Maiden voyage!

Yeah, surprisingly fun. I wasn't sure about only having 3 speeds, but with the torque on the 383, it's very driveable.

Thanks Monc440. I had to look it up on YouTube to learn the shifting pattern haha.

    Maiden voyage!

I got to drive it around the block for the first time yesterday! It's running on an auxiliary fuel tank as I'm still struggling to remove the sealant from the inside of my fuel tank. It was my first time diving a column-shifted manual transmission and first time driving a car with no power...

    1965 Newport update

Thank you 413! It was such a thrill to hear the old beast roaring back to life. I'm excited to get it on the road.

    1965 Newport update

Seriously! Only parts I've had to buy so far to get it running are a fuel filter and some gasket paper. I will keep the updates coming

    1965 Newport update

After a month or so of buying this from a tow yard, it lives! I had no history on it so I went through the trouble of inspecting the vital systems before trying to fire it up. I took apart the carburetor, gave it a good cleaning, and put it back on. Hooked up the fuel pump to an auxiliary fuel...
